Devdutt Padikkal, the talented left-handed batsman, recently delivered a career-defining performance, scoring an impressive 167 runs in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle. This exceptional display, his maiden Test century, was not merely a moment of brilliance but the culmination of two years of arduous effort and meticulous preparation. Resuming his innings from an overnight score of 131, Padikkal showcased remarkable resilience and skill, facing 230 balls and decorating his innings with 15 boundaries and a solitary six. His substantial contribution was instrumental in propelling India to a formidable total of 460 for 9 on the second day, which was notably affected by rain. Padikkal openly expressed that he had diligently prepared himself for this very opportunity, envisioning a scenario where he could make a significant impact on the international stage. “Definitely. I’ve dreamt of this moment. For the last two years, I’ve been working really hard to try and make sure that when I get that opportunity, I can do something special like this, and I’m really happy to do that,” Padikkal reflected, underlining his long-standing ambition and commitment.
One of the most striking aspects of Padikkal’s innings was his proactive and aggressive approach against the Sri Lankan spinners. He demonstrated a clear intent, employing confident footwork and a range of attacking shots to effectively nullify the bowlers’ rhythm and apply pressure back on them. He elaborated on his strategic mindset, stating, “I think we have discussed that at length, especially when you’re playing spin, it’s important that you have certain plans in your head. You cannot go out there and expect to react all the time. It’s important that we have a couple of shots in your head that you want to play as soon as you go out there, so that you can put some pressure on the bowler as well. So, I think over the last year or so, we have really worked on trying to find ways in our own strengths that you can really implement to make sure that you put pressure back.” This thoughtful approach, coupled with unwavering clarity and absolute commitment to every stroke, significantly enhanced his footwork and overall confidence at the crease.
Padikkal’s innings was also a testament to his insatiable hunger for runs. After reaching his century, he did not rest on his laurels but meticulously converted it into a substantial 167. He emphasized the critical importance of maintaining focus immediately after achieving a significant milestone. “I think honestly, it’s just the hunger to score more runs. I just enjoy batting out there, and the moment you get to 100, it’s easy to relax and feel that relief. But it’s important that for me, the next 20-30 balls are the really important phase that I try and make sure that I’m completely focused, completely there,” he explained. He believes that successfully navigating this crucial period after a century makes the subsequent batting much easier. Drawing inspiration from numerous experienced cricketers from his home state of Karnataka, who have consistently scored big hundreds, he expressed his desire to emulate their success. Looking ahead, Padikkal anticipates that the Galle pitch will become increasingly challenging as the match progresses. Despite his heroic and lengthy innings in the humid conditions, his immediate plans for celebration were surprisingly modest and relatable. “Not really. I think I’m tired, so I’m just going to go back to bed now,” he humorously concluded, reflecting the sheer exhaustion after his monumental effort.
