ITV viewers saw Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid and Ed Balls detail the latest headlines during the programme.
Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid has issued an update on Keir Starmer’s leadership.
As the ITV show returned from an advert break on Wednesday (March 13), the presenter told ITV viewers she had some breaking news to share.
She announced: “So, breaking news in the last few minutes, 11 unions affiliated with the Labour Party issue a statement saying, in their words, ‘it is clear the Prime Minister will not lead Labour into the next general election and a plan will have to be put in place for the election of a new leader of the Labour party'”
Ed Balls shared that the statement comes after Wes Streeting was seen walking into Downing Street to meet the current Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, King Charles is preparing to deliver the King’s Speech this morning, which sets out the government’s legislative agenda for the upcoming parliamentary session.
The two presenters then spoke to Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Paymaster General and Minister for the Cabinet Office.
Addressing their guest, Ed commented: “90 MPs saying the Prime Minister needs to stand down now, four ministerial resignations, council leaders are saying he has to go.
“Now all the Labour-affiliated trade unions are saying Keir Starmer can’t be the leader at the next general election, isn’t the writing on the wall for Keir Starmer? And it’s just a question of when he announces he’s standing down?”
He replied: “I’ve not seen the TULO statements, though I understand one has been recently released-” As Ed started to reiterate what the statement had said regarding Keir Starmer, Susanna cut in to interrupt the duo as Wes Streeting was seen walking out of Downing Street.
She highlighted that it had only been around 10 minutes after he was seen arriving. Susanna questioned the MP, asking for his thoughts on the meeting, which had either not taken place or was broken up quickly.
He commented: “The Prime Minister said yesterday, as he always does, that if any cabinet ministers have concerns or just want to have a quick chat over coffee, then they’re very welcome to do so.
“I was in last night talking to the Prime Minister. That they’ve had just a quick coffee this morning, I think it is probably unsurprising, listening to some of the social media coverage and looking at social media, you’d think it was something out of the last scene from Casino Royale, the way that it’s been built up.
“This was something that was offered to all cabinet ministers, and indeed the Prime Minister’s door is always open to cabinet ministers, so the fact they probably had a quick coffee, I don’t find particularly surprising.”
However, Ed and Susanna seemed taken aback by the possibility that Wes Streeting had gone over for a drink.
The ITV star replied: “I have to say, I know you’re a very good minister for Europe, but what you just said sounds like you’re from a different planet!”
