Google Announces Campaign Benchmarking In Google Analytics

Google Enhances Analytics with Ask Advisor Benchmarking and AI Overviews

Google is rolling out a significant update to its analytics suite, introducing a new “Ask Advisor” benchmarking feature within Google Analytics. This innovative tool will allow businesses to compare their Google Analytics campaign performance against anonymized averages from similar businesses, providing invaluable insights for strategic optimization.

The announcement was made by Josh Moser, Senior Director of Product Management, in a blog post, detailing a series of updates across both Google Ads and Google Analytics aimed at leveraging AI for enhanced business intelligence.

Ask Advisor: A New Era of Performance Comparison

The core of this new feature lies within Ask Advisor, a cross-product intelligent agent first unveiled at Google Marketing Live in May. Ask Advisor, currently in beta for English-language accounts, is designed to work seamlessly across Google Ads, Analytics, Merchant Center, and Google Marketing Platform.

This benchmarking capability empowers users to pose questions about their performance in natural language and receive comprehensive, comparative responses. For instance, a user might ask, “How are my campaigns performing compared to similar businesses?” and receive a detailed breakdown of their standing within their industry peer group.

Understanding the Benchmark’s Foundation

Google’s existing documentation on benchmarking highlights its ability to report median, 25th, and 75th percentiles for peer groups within various industry categories. These reports cover crucial metrics across Acquisition, Engagement, Monetization, and Retention. For benchmarking to function, a property must have “Modeling contributions & business insights” activated in Admin settings. The peer group is typically established during setup based on the chosen industry category, further refined by signals from URLs and app attributes.

Users have the flexibility to adjust their peer group, choosing from 25 top-level categories and numerous subcategories, down to highly specific niches like “athletic shoes.” However, the announcement did not clarify whether Ask Advisor will utilize these pre-defined peer groups or generate its own. Similarly, it’s unclear if the “Modeling contributions” setting will gate Ask Advisor’s benchmarking in the same way it does for existing benchmarking features.

The Importance of Contextual Benchmarking

The utility of any benchmark hinges on the relevance of the comparison group. A benchmark is only truly valuable if the businesses within it closely resemble your own. Google Analytics currently builds a default peer group from the industry category selected during property creation, augmented by data from URLs and app attributes. Users retain the ability to modify this peer group within Analytics, a crucial step for ensuring meaningful comparisons. This level of control is particularly important given that other Google reporting tools, such as Merchant Center, do not offer such customization, as previously noted in discussions about Google’s AI Search data gaps.

Beyond Benchmarking: AI Overviews and Personalized Insights

The updates extend beyond benchmarking. Google Analytics will now feature “AI Overviews” at the top of the page, providing concise summaries of significant changes since the last login. These are distinct from the AI Overviews found in Google Search results and are designed to offer quick, actionable insights into Analytics data. Users can opt-in to receive notifications via phone or email, with customizable frequency settings.

Furthermore, Google Ads will receive personalized insights cards tailored to each business, alongside a new Dashboards feature that allows for chart creation from simple text prompts. This Dashboards functionality is also slated for Google Analytics, though a specific release date has not yet been provided. Ask Advisor, the Ads insights cards, and Dashboards are all currently available in beta for English-language accounts.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Data-Driven Decision Making

While Google has yet to specify the exact rollout timeline for the Ask Advisor benchmark or how the comparisons will be presented within the tool, these updates collectively signal a clear direction towards more intuitive, AI-powered analytics. By democratizing access to competitive insights and simplifying data interpretation, Google aims to empower businesses of all sizes to make more informed decisions and optimize their digital strategies more effectively.
