‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ Preview Is Netflix’s Most-Watched Weekly Title

'Grand Theft Auto VI' Preview Is Netflix's Most-Watched Weekly Title

Netflix’s Most-Watched Title of the Week Isn’t a Movie—It’s a Video Game

In a surprising turn for streaming charts, Netflix’s most-watched title of the past week wasn’t a prestige drama or a blockbuster film, but a high-octane video game preview.

A 27-minute extended look at the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI dominated the platform, racking up a staggering 31.1 million views globally over the weekend. The footage claimed the No. 1 spot on the English film list, outperforming traditional cinematic content in 87 of the 93 countries tracked by the streaming giant.

A Masterclass in Hype

The preview, captured entirely from in-game footage on the PlayStation 5, offers fans their most comprehensive look yet at the sprawling open-world environment of the upcoming title. The sheer volume of viewership underscores the massive cultural footprint of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. The series has been on an effective 13-year hiatus since the record-breaking release of Grand Theft Auto V in 2013—a title that famously became the fastest entertainment product in history to earn $1 billion, doing so in just three days.

By the Numbers: Netflix vs. YouTube

Interestingly, the video reached audiences across multiple platforms, though its performance metrics varied wildly due to tracking differences. Rockstar Games released the same 27-minute video on YouTube six hours after its Netflix debut. While the YouTube clip has garnered 17 million views, the two platforms calculate “views” using entirely different methodologies.

YouTube counts a view the moment a video begins to play, whereas Netflix calculates its viewership figures by dividing the total hours viewed by the content’s runtime. The fact that the footage secured the top spot on Netflix under such a strict metric highlights the intense, sustained engagement from gamers eager to consume every frame of the upcoming sequel.

The Competition

The Grand Theft Auto VI preview’s dominance pushed other new releases to the back seat. The Whisper Man, which also premiered over the weekend, landed in second place on the English film list with 23.2 million views. Meanwhile, on the television side, Death of a Pastor’s Wife claimed the top spot for English series, debuting with 19 million views.

As the industry looks toward the eventual launch of the game, this unprecedented streaming performance suggests that the appetite for Grand Theft Auto VI may well eclipse even the most successful Hollywood film releases, signaling another potential record-shattering launch for Rockstar Games.
