India’s GST Collections Surge 14.8% to Record Rs 1.99 Lakh Crore in August

NEW DELHI: The Indian economy has showcased remarkable resilience, with the government reporting a significant uptick in tax buoyancy. According to provisional data released on Tuesday, the gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue for August 2026 reached an impressive Rs 1,99,853 crore, marking a 14.8% increase compared to the same period last year.

Driving Factors: Domestic Growth and Imports

The robust performance in August was bolstered by a balanced contribution from both domestic economic activity and international trade.

Revenue generated from domestic transactions saw a healthy growth of 9.3%, reaching Rs 1,37,249 crore. Simultaneously, revenue derived from imports experienced a sharper surge, climbing 29% to Rs 62,604 crore—up from Rs 48,546 crore in August 2025.

Industry experts view these figures as a strong indicator of macroeconomic stability. Abhishek Jain, Partner and National Head of Indirect Tax at KPMG in India, noted, “A strong 14.8% growth in overall GST collections has added to the cheer of 7.8% growth in GDP in Q1. This collectively shows the robustness of the Indian economy despite geo-political conflicts and global economic uncertainty.”

Breakdown of Revenue and Refunds

After adjusting for refunds, the net GST revenue for the month stood at Rs 1,68,057 crore, an 8.3% increase over the previous year’s figure of Rs 1,55,181 crore.

The government also processed a significantly higher volume of refunds during the month, which rose 67.9% year-on-year to Rs 31,795 crore. This included:

  • Domestic refunds: Rs 18,490 crore (a 72.6% increase).
  • Export refunds (via ICEGATE): Rs 13,305 crore (a 61.8% increase).

The granular data further revealed that the Central GST (CGST) collection reached Rs 38,413 crore, while State GST (SGST) collections hit Rs 46,316 crore. Integrated GST (IGST) from domestic transactions contributed Rs 52,520 crore to the exchequer.

Fiscal Trajectory

On a cumulative basis, the current fiscal year continues to show a positive trend. Gross GST revenue has climbed 11% to reach Rs 10,42,757 crore so far. Similarly, net GST revenue has seen a 9% growth, rising to Rs 8,89,523 crore compared to the Rs 8,15,939 crore recorded during the corresponding period in the previous year.

Looking Ahead: 57th GST Council Meeting

With these promising figures providing a strong fiscal backdrop, the GST Council is set to convene for its 57th meeting in New Delhi on September 12. The high-level session, which will follow a preparatory officers’ meeting on September 11, is expected to address key policy updates and continue the council’s efforts in simplifying the tax structure for stakeholders.
