Beyond the Tides: Director Mathimaran Unveils the Emotional Core of the Soori-Starrer ‘Mandaadi’
As the release date for the highly anticipated sea-based drama Mandaadi approaches, the film’s director, Mathimaran, is pulling back the curtain on the grueling creative process behind the project. With a theatrical release set for September 10, the filmmaker sat down for an exclusive interview to discuss the inspirations, technical challenges, and the transformative performance of lead actor Soori.
The Spark of a Traditional Sport
While the teaser for Mandaadi has captivated audiences with its high-octane boat races and sweeping oceanic vistas, Mathimaran insists that the film is far more than a sports drama. The director revealed that the initial inspiration was a traditional, lesser-known form of boat racing that he discovered during his research.
“The sport was just the trigger,” Mathimaran explained. “As I spent time within the fishing community, I realized the sport was only the surface. There was an entire world beneath it—their livelihoods, their struggles, their deep-rooted traditions, and the way they survive as a collective.”
A Transformative Turn for Soori
The film features Soori in a complex role that demands a wide spectrum of emotions, from deep-seated guilt to vulnerability and redemption. Mathimaran was quick to heap praise on the actor’s work ethic, noting that he did not simply play the part of a fisherman; he endeavored to become one.
“He completely surrendered to the character,” the director remarked. “He didn’t approach it as a performance; he spent time immersing himself in the community’s way of life, working on his physicality and emotional depth.”
The cast is further bolstered by the legendary Sathyaraj, whose gravitas, according to Mathimaran, was essential for the project. “I needed someone who could carry authority and history through sheer presence, and Sathyaraj sir brought exactly that emotional weight to the screen.”
Battling the Elements
Transitioning from his previous film, Selfie, to the large-scale production of Mandaadi presented a massive shift in logistical hurdles. Shooting at sea, where the environment is constantly shifting, proved to be the director’s biggest test.
“On land, you have control. At sea, the weather, the waves, and the currents dictate the schedule,” Mathimaran admitted. “The boat-racing sequences pushed me well beyond my comfort zone. I learned that you cannot fight the ocean; you have to be patient and flexible, working with what nature gives you.”
Emotion Before Spectacle
Despite the grand scale of the action, the film is anchored by a grounded, human story. Mathimaran remains firm in his philosophy that spectacle is meaningless without a solid emotional foundation.
“We followed a clear hierarchy: first the character, then the emotion, and finally the spectacle,” he said. As the film gears up for its September 10 premiere, the director hopes that viewers will find themselves deeply connected to the themes of second chances and the difficulty of earning redemption.
Mandaadi features a stellar ensemble cast, including Soori, Suhass, and Mahima Nambiar, with music composed by GV Prakash Kumar. By blending high-stakes action with a deeply human narrative, the film promises to be one of the most compelling releases of the year.
