New Delhi: Amidst growing speculation regarding the internal dynamics of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), board secretary Devajit Saikia has moved to silence rumors concerning the future of the senior men’s selection committee. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Saikia addressed the absence of chief selector Ajit Agarkar from a pivotal review meeting and clarified the BCCI’s current operational priorities.

The Mystery of the Absent Chief Selector

The primary point of contention in recent media reports was the absence of Ajit Agarkar from a high-level meeting convened to review India’s recent cricketing performances and outline a roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Addressing the speculation, Saikia explained that the meeting was organized at short notice, catching the chief selector while he was out of town.

“Today he (Agarkar) was out of station, so he could not be a part of the meeting,” Saikia told reporters. He added that the board made concerted efforts to bring Agarkar into the discussion via video conferencing; however, the chief selector was positioned in a location with poor connectivity, rendering digital participation impossible.

“There was no such discussion on this in today’s meeting. I do not comment on rumors. We did not have any such discussions, nor did we have such intentions,” Saikia asserted. He further clarified that the board is not currently considering the appointment of a separate “Director of Cricket” for the men’s team, reinforcing that the existing structure remains the board’s preferred path forward.

The meeting was described by the BCCI secretary as a strategic review rather than an operational one. The board’s agenda was strictly limited to evaluating recent performances across tours in England, Ireland, and Sri Lanka, and ensuring the team’s preparation is aligned with the long-term goal of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Saikia emphasized that the BCCI remains committed to respecting the autonomy of the selection committee. “We have not discussed team combinations or player selection. That is the domain of the selectors. When they meet to select the squad for upcoming series, they will evaluate the necessary parameters themselves,” he noted.

With the 2027 World Cup looming on the horizon, the Indian cricket team faces a rigorous international schedule. The team is set to navigate several high-stakes series, starting with a T20I clash against Afghanistan, followed by white-ball assignments against the West Indies and an extensive tour of New Zealand.
