New Film ‘Hindi Pa Nag-aagahan si Tau’ Explores the Fragility of Childhood Body Image

MANILA, Philippines — As the Philippine independent film scene gears up for the upcoming Sine Kabataan 2026 Film Festival, a poignant new project is set to take center stage. Hindi Pa Nag-aagahan si Tau, a comedy-drama short film directed by Janno Pelias, promises an intimate and heart-wrenching look at the intersection of childhood innocence, societal pressure, and body image.

A Journey Toward Self-Acceptance

The film follows Tau, a chubby nine-year-old boy whose world is turned upside down when he is cast as a string bean in his school’s Nutrition Month performance. Tasked with the impossible goal of fitting into his costume, Tau begins a desperate journey to lose weight. Through this struggle, the film examines the heavy toll that social expectations place on children, highlighting the bittersweet discovery that the acceptance one craves often comes at the expense of one’s own identity.

Director Janno Pelias, known for his award-winning documentary work, drew deeply from his own childhood to craft the narrative. “When I was nine, I was teased because of my weight,” Pelias shared. “The irony was that I loved vegetables… but when I became conscious of my body, the food I loved began to taste different. I wrote this film to return to that boy with compassion and to question how institutions that promote health and wellness can unintentionally scar children.”

A Creative Collaboration

The production is spearheaded by producer Kylechandler Bigay, an emerging force in the independent circuit recently recognized by Rolling Stone Philippines. Bigay, who has known Pelias since their early college years at De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde, notes that the project is rooted in a shared vulnerability.

“It is hard to grow up in a world where you always feel watched,” says Bigay. “I saw myself in the character of Tau. This film is a warm embrace for the children we once were and a call to love the people we have become.”

Stellar Cast and Production

Hindi Pa Nag-aagahan si Tau features a talented ensemble cast, led by Stephen Wardell Dizon as the titular character, alongside Meryll Soriano, Don Cerbito, Reid Kian Leoncio, and Christina Simon.

The production is supported by an extensive crew of industry professionals, including Director of Photography Kara Moreno (LPS), Production Designer Mar-ian Ejandra, and Editor Kriztyle Sihiyon. The project also prioritizes the psychological well-being of its subject matter, featuring Mental Health Coordinator John De Guzman, and benefits from the creative input of esteemed script consultants Glenn Barit, Anya Zulueta, and Dwein Ruedas Baltazar.

With a production team backed by CMB Film Services, Inc. and various co-producers, the film is poised to be a significant addition to this year’s festival lineup.

Hindi Pa Nag-aagahan si Tau is scheduled to premiere this September at the Sine Kabataan 2026 Film Festival. It serves as a reminder to audiences of all ages that in a world often too quick to judge, the most radical act is to offer gentleness to one’s own reflection.
