In the high-stakes world of retail, Jennie Moon operates at the pinnacle of the industry. As the General Manager of the iconic Australian accessories label Mimco, the 49-year-old Brunswick resident is accustomed to overseeing large-scale operations and strategic decision-making. However, when she clocks out of the office, Moon trades in her corporate responsibilities for a different set of tools: those found in a hardware store.

Despite a professional background that commands executive-level precision, Moon’s passion for home renovation is entirely self-taught. Counter to what one might expect from a fashion industry veteran, she did not grow up in a “renovator’s house,” nor did she have a background in trade skills. Instead, her journey into home improvement was born out of a pragmatic mix of creative curiosity and a healthy dose of fiscal responsibility.

“I just like doing things myself,” Moon explains. “I love saving money, too.”

Her approach to home improvement is perhaps best exemplified by a recent ambitious project: the overhaul of her bathroom. After deciding to transition her space to a modern, spa-like aesthetic, she explored the option of using micro-cement, a popular, seamless finish often seen in high-end luxury interiors.

After receiving a professional quote of $7,000 for the job, Moon’s business instincts kicked in. Rather than accepting the industry standard price, she decided to conduct a personal audit of the project’s requirements.

“I thought, let me see how much it actually costs,” she recalls. The raw materials tallied up to just $1,500. Armed with that figure, Moon bypassed the contractors and completed the installation herself, pocketing a significant saving while achieving the high-end finish she desired.

For Moon, the shift from leading a major fashion house to mastering home renovations is a testament to the power of modern self-education. Like many modern DIY enthusiasts, she relies on digital tutorials to bridge the gap between ambition and execution, proving that with enough research and a willingness to get one’s hands dirty, even the most daunting professional-grade tasks are within reach for the average homeowner.
