For many engineering graduates, securing a position at Amazon is the pinnacle of their academic efforts. Vivekananda, a distinguished 2021 B.Tech graduate in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Hyderabad, was presented with precisely such an opportunity – an offer as a Software Development Engineer (SDE). Yet, driven by a deep-seated interest in governance, economics, public policy, and public service, he made the audacious decision to decline this coveted corporate role. Instead, he embarked on the challenging journey of preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, a decision that would define the next four years of his life.
His UPSC aspirations, however, did not culminate in immediate success. Despite appearing for the Civil Services Examination three times – in 2022, 2023, and 2025 – and consistently clearing the rigorous Preliminary Examination, he narrowly missed securing a place on the final selection list. For many, these repeated setbacks might have signaled the end of a dream, but for Vivekananda, they merely represented a detour, not a dead end. His unwavering spirit prevented him from succumbing to despair.
Instead of dwelling on past outcomes, Vivekananda strategically sought alternative avenues to leverage his strengths. His exceptional aptitude for mathematics, a skill honed through years of rigorous academic training at IIT Hyderabad, proved instrumental. He successfully cleared the SSC CGL 2025 examination, subsequently earning a prestigious appointment as a Customs Inspector in September 2025. This accomplishment, while significant, was not his ultimate destination.
With an innate drive for continuous growth and development, Vivekananda turned his attention towards another formidable challenge: the Common Admission Test (CAT). What makes this particular phase of his journey truly astonishing is the limited timeframe he had for preparation.
