Record-breaking results day for Fettes College – The NEN – North Edinburgh News

Fettes College is currently celebrating an exceptional year as the institution recorded record-breaking results in its combined International Baccalaureate (IB) and A Level examinations. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given the school’s unique academic structure, offering students the choice between A Levels and the internationally recognized IB program, distinguishing it among educational institutions.

The Edinburgh-based establishment, which stands out as the only school in Scotland to provide both IB and A Level pathways, saw a significant proportion of its A Level grades achieving the highest distinctions. A remarkable 46% of all A Level grades were at A or A, with an impressive 80% of entries securing A to B grades. Further highlighting individual excellence, 14 students attained a perfect sweep of A and A grades, and an additional six students achieved three or more As. This year’s combined results mark an unprecedented success for the college: 22% of grades were A/7, 63% were A-A/7-6, and 89% achieved A*-B/7-5.

These outstanding academic achievements have paved the way for Fettes College graduates to secure placements at prestigious universities across the UK, including Bath, Cambridge, Edinburgh, King’s College London, Imperial, LSE, St Andrews, and UCL. Beyond the UK, a number of students have also gained admission to highly competitive international institutions such as Georgetown University, McGill University, UC Berkeley, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Toronto.

Anushka Chakravarty, Deputy Head (Academic) at Fettes College, expressed immense pride in the students’ accomplishments, commending their academic curiosity, determination, and high aspirations that led to these fantastic outcomes and successful university placements. She also acknowledged the inspiring personal journeys behind the statistics and lauded the dedicated staff who provided unwavering academic and pastoral support.

Richard Girvan, the new Head of Fettes College, shared his enthusiasm for the institution’s success, stating that these strong results powerfully reflect the ambition and quality of the community he has joined. He emphasized that graduates leave Fettes not only with impressive academic credentials but also with the confidence, independence, diverse experiences, and enduring friendships cultivated through a comprehensive education unique in Scotland. Girvan extended his warm congratulations to the graduating class, wishing them continued success in their future endeavors, confident that they will draw upon their Fettes experiences and relationships long after their departure.

In addition to their core qualifications, 56 A Level students at Fettes also completed the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). A significant 23% of these EPQ projects were awarded the coveted A grade, with a total of 80% achieving A/A, further surpassing previous year’s excellent outcomes. This success underscores the college’s commitment to fostering independent research and critical thinking skills among its students, ensuring they are well-prepared for higher education and beyond.
