COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — India captain Shubman Gill has opted to set the tone for the deciding match of the series, winning the toss and electing to bat first in the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club on Sunday.
The visitors enter the encounter with momentum firmly on their side, having dominated the series opener in Galle with a comprehensive 165-run victory. For India, the match presents an opportunity to seal a series win, while the hosts are under immense pressure to secure a victory to avoid a series whitewash.
In a bid to revitalize their lineup, the Sri Lankan team management has made tactical adjustments. Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who stepped in as a concussion substitute for the injured Dinesh Chandimal in the first Test, has been retained for his first full Test appearance. With Chandimal still unavailable for selection, the hosts will look to Sooriyabandara to anchor the middle order. Furthermore, the Lankans have handed a Test debut to Kamil Mishara, who replaces opener Nishan Madushka at the top of the order.
India, conversely, has opted to bolster their spin-bowling all-round options. The team management decided to leave out left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav in favor of Saransh Jain, who makes his debut today. Jain arrives at the international level with an impressive domestic track record, boasting 2,223 runs and 188 wickets in first-class cricket, signaling a desire for greater depth in the lower-middle order.
The strategic battle at the Sinhalese Sports Club will be pivotal, with both sides looking to exploit the conditions. While India aims to consolidate its lead, Sri Lanka’s captain, Dhananjaya de Silva, will be hoping that the changes to his side provide the necessary stability to challenge the Indian bowlers and force a competitive cricket match.
