India Builds Commanding Lead Despite Jayasuriya’s Strikes on Day 4 of Galle Test

GALLE, Sri Lanka – India extended its dominant position against Sri Lanka on Day 4 of the first Test, reaching 116 for 4 at lunch and pushing their lead to a formidable 294 runs. While left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya managed to claim two crucial wickets for the hosts, India’s aggressive batting, particularly from first-innings centurion Devdutt Padikkal, kept them firmly in control.

Resuming their second innings with a substantial 178-run lead, India’s primary objective was to quickly amass runs and set an imposing target, a strategy influenced by the looming weather forecast. However, the morning session wasn’t without its challenges. The early departure of Yashasvi Jaiswal for a three-ball duck, caught behind, provided Sri Lanka with a glimmer of hope.

It was the partnership between the stylish Devdutt Padikkal and Lokesh Rahul that steadied the Indian innings. The duo, who also combined effectively in the first innings, added a rapid 65 runs off just 85 balls. Rahul, displaying a more attacking intent in this innings, hit two sixes before being dismissed caught at long-off while attempting another boundary against Jayasuriya. He contributed a brisk 35 runs.

Jayasuriya struck again shortly after, trapping Shubman Gill lbw for 8, which saw India momentarily stumble to 81 for 3. Despite these setbacks, Padikkal, who registered a magnificent 167 in the first innings, continued to score freely, adding 44 runs off 75 balls before being adjudged lbw to Keshara Nuwantha. His consistent performance has been a cornerstone of India’s strong showing in this Test.

At the lunch break, Rishabh Pant (21 not out) and Dhruv Jurel (5 not out) were at the crease, looking to further solidify India’s advantage. The visitors will be aiming to declare their innings swiftly in the post-lunch session, giving their bowlers ample time to exploit the conditions and secure victory.

This ongoing Test marks the 50th international match played at the historic Galle International Stadium. Both teams are keenly aware of the importance of this encounter, as valuable World Test Championship points are at stake. India currently sits in fifth place in the standings, while Sri Lanka is closely behind in sixth, making every session critical for their championship aspirations.

India’s first innings saw them post a commanding total of 462, largely thanks to Padikkal’s heroic century. Sri Lanka, in response, was bowled out for 284 late on Day 3, leaving them with a significant deficit to overcome. With a commanding lead already in hand and the possibility of a declaration looming, India is well-positioned to dictate the terms of the remainder of the match.
