In a commanding display of Test cricket, India solidified its dominant position against Sri Lanka on the second day of their opening match, with rising star Devdutt Padikkal achieving a career-best score of 167 runs. The Indian team, having elected to bat first after winning the toss at Galle, reached an impressive total of 447 for 8 after 113 overs by the close of play on Sunday.
Padikkal’s magnificent innings, marking his maiden Test century, was the cornerstone of India’s formidable first-innings score. He found able support from Lokesh Rahul, who contributed a well-made 82, and Dhruv Jurel, who added a swift 51. Despite the strong batting performance, Sri Lanka’s bowlers fought hard, with left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya leading the attack with figures of 4 for 109, while debutant off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha claimed 3 for 175.
The day’s play was significantly impacted by adverse weather conditions, as persistent rain led to the complete washout of the morning session and a substantial part of the afternoon. However, the weather eventually relented, allowing for just over three hours of thrilling cricket action.
Resuming from their overnight score of 288 for 2, India aimed to further extend their advantage. Rishabh Pant, looking to accelerate the scoring, played an aggressive innings of 39, but ultimately lost his wicket to Nuwantha, who secured his first Test scalp. Following Pant’s dismissal, Lokesh Rahul, who had retired hurt on day one due to cramps after scoring 77, returned to the crease. In the interim, Padikkal reached his personal milestone of 150 runs off 215 balls. Rahul, however, couldn’t convert his promising start into a larger score on the second day, eventually being caught at short leg off Nuwantha’s bowling.
The Sri Lankan bowlers then capitalized on a brief period of vulnerability, as Nuwantha also trapped Ravindra Jadeja leg before wicket for 13, and Jayasuriya brilliantly stumped Padikkal in the 92nd over. This saw India lose four wickets for just 70 runs after the restart of play, with two wickets falling on either side of the tea break, bringing the score to 377 for 7.
However, Dhruv Jurel and Manav Suthar steadied the innings once more, forging a crucial 55-run partnership off 66 balls. Their efforts ensured India surpassed the 400-run mark in the final session, although Jayasuriya eventually dismissed Jurel after he had contributed a valuable 50 runs off 66 deliveries.
