India and Uzbekistan Elevate Ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Target $5 Billion Trade
TASHKENT – In a significant move to deepen ties in Central Asia, India and Uzbekistan have officially upgraded their bilateral relationship to a “comprehensive strategic partnership.” The announcement followed high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, centered on expanding cooperation across critical sectors, including energy, defense, and technology.
A centerpiece of the diplomatic outreach is an impending long-term agreement for the supply of uranium from Uzbekistan to India. As a major regional producer, Uzbekistan’s commitment to providing nuclear fuel is expected to bolster India’s energy security.
Ambitious Economic Goals
During the summit, both leaders unveiled a roadmap to significantly boost economic engagement, setting a target to reach bilateral trade of $5 billion by 2030. While India currently ranks among Uzbekistan’s top 10 trading partners, officials from both nations acknowledged that the existing trade volume of $1.32 billion remains well below its full potential.
To bridge this gap, the two countries agreed to form a joint working group tasked with eliminating non-tariff barriers, streamlining payment systems, and improving connectivity.
Defense and Security Cooperation
Security remained a focal point of the discussions. Prime Minister Modi emphasized a “zero tolerance” policy toward terrorism and extremism, noting that a robust India-Uzbekistan partnership serves as a stabilizing force in the Central Asian region.
The two leaders endorsed a deepening of defense ties, which will now encompass regular exchanges, capacity-building programs, and, significantly, the co-production and co-development of defense equipment. “Close defense and security cooperation between our two countries reflects our deep mutual trust,” PM Modi remarked.
A Future-Ready Partnership
The summit resulted in the signing of 11 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering a diverse array of sectors, including:
- Technology & Innovation: AI, Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), and space research.
- Resources: Critical minerals and clean energy.
- Socio-Cultural Ties: Education, Ayurveda, tourism, and the restoration of shared Buddhist heritage sites.
To guide this multifaceted partnership, the two sides agreed to establish a Foreign Minister-level coordination council. This body will ensure consistent progress across all areas of cooperation.
Global South Solidarity
The meeting also underscored a shared vision for the “Global South.” Following the conferment of one of Uzbekistan’s highest civilian honors upon him, Prime Minister Modi expressed that the gesture places an added responsibility on India to work alongside Uzbekistan as partners for the “betterment of humanity.”
As the summit concluded, the message from Tashkent was clear: with Uzbekistan serving as the heart of Central Asia, India’s strategic engagement with the region is set to become increasingly future-ready, driven by tangible results and mutual economic growth.
