An open-backed vest by Maggie Marilyn is labelled Fortune Favours The Brave. An A-line mini dress with a ruffled hem is named Someday Soon, and there’s a windbreaker that goes by Light At The End Of The Tunnel. The palette – off-whites and more pink than most post-millennial brands would normally be willing to embrace – underscores the brand’s eye-winking optimism. It’s girly, yes, but look closer, and those puff sleeves are cut from textured workwear-style tweeds, and the covered buttons sit on expertly cut tailoring.
The woman behind the youthfully spirited brand is Maggie Hewitt. From New Zealand’s Bay of Islands, the 32-year-old looks like she could have walked off a Maggie Marilyn fashion shoot herself. She’s a morning person who lives in North Bondi, has a face-encompassing grin and walks everywhere, even when heavily pregnant. She is used to being underestimated, she says with a knowing smile. “In the beginning, I definitely had my head in the clothes, but I’m not that person any more. It has not been sunshine and rainbows.”
