iPhone Ultra leakers reveal new details around release and 'extremely limited' availability

Apple’s Foldable iPhone Faces "Extremely Limited" Launch Supply, September Reveal Imminent

CUPERTINO, CA – Apple’s highly anticipated foldable iPhone, rumored to be named either the iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold, is expected to make its debut at the upcoming Apple September event. However, despite the imminent reveal, prospective buyers are warned to prepare for significant supply constraints, according to a reputable leaker.

Over the weekend, prominent Apple leaker "Fixed Focus Digital" shared on Chinese social media platform Weibo (via 9to5Mac) that the supply of the foldable iPhone would be "extremely limited" following its unveiling next month. This news could dampen the excitement for many eager to get their hands on Apple’s foray into the foldable smartphone market.

Apple is reportedly aiming for a production run of around 10 million units, a target outlined in a July report by Nikkei Asia. However, suppliers are projected to require 3 to 5 months to achieve this output goal. This extended ramp-up period suggests that initial availability will be scarce, making the device a challenging acquisition for early adopters.

Echoes of the iPhone X Launch?

The potential supply bottleneck draws parallels to the launch of the iPhone X in 2017. That release was plagued by production issues, primarily due to complexities with new components such as the TrueDepth camera system for Face ID and constraints in OLED panel manufacturing. These challenges led to pre-orders selling out within minutes and shipping dates being pushed back by several months. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously predicted that suppliers might only ship 7-8 million units in 2026, further fueling concerns about limited availability.

Despite initial whispers of a U.S.-exclusive launch, Fixed Focus Digital’s latest intelligence suggests a broader global release. Their sources indicate that mass production is proceeding smoothly with Chinese suppliers, pointing towards an international availability from day one, albeit in limited quantities.

The Naming Conundrum: Ultra or Fold?

The official name of Apple’s foldable device remains a hot topic of debate. For months, "iPhone Fold" was the widely accepted placeholder. However, the "iPhone Ultra" moniker gained significant traction earlier this year. More recently, several analysts and leakers have cast doubt on the "Ultra" designation.

Leaker Instant Digital, also on Weibo, is among the latest to express skepticism about the "Ultra" name for the foldable. He believes Apple tends to reserve the "Ultra" namesake for anniversary models and subsequent high-end devices, suggesting the foldable might not fit this criteria.

Conversely, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, a long-standing authority on Apple rumors, reported earlier this month on X that "Everyone calls it the Ultra internally. We’ll see what happens." This conflicting information only adds to the intrigue surrounding the device’s final branding.

All questions surrounding the name and availability will likely be answered on September 9th, when Apple is expected to officially reveal its first foldable smartphone. Tom’s Guide will be on-site at the Apple event to provide comprehensive coverage, including breaking news and hands-on impressions of what could become a contender for the best foldable phone.
