Local Business Spotlight: Danville’s Jocko’s Prepares for National Debut
From long-standing culinary staples to new developments in the Champaign-Urbana housing market, business in East Central Illinois is thriving.
A National Stage for a Local Icon
For generations, the residents of Danville have flocked to Jocko’s at 305 W. Williams St. for its signature thin-crust pizzas and legendary salad bar. Now, the community favorite is ready to share its story with the rest of the country.
The restaurant, a multi-generational family business, has been selected for a feature on the “ABR Roadshow,” a program produced by America’s Best Restaurants. The media firm travels across the United States to highlight independent eateries that excel in reviews, community involvement, and local atmosphere.
Co-owner Natalie Diveley, who represents the third generation of the family running the shop, credits their success to more than just the menu. While the “Jocko’s Special”—a loaded pie with sausage, beef, mushrooms, pepperoni, green peppers, and onions—is a customer favorite, she insists the true secret is the staff.
“Customers come in just to see them,” Diveley said. “This whole team and the customers have become family.”
Film crews are scheduled to arrive on September 2 to capture the lunch rush. Jocko’s won’t be the only local spot in the spotlight; the popular Smith Burger Co. is also slated for filming that same day at their location in The Yard in Urbana.
Development and Growth in Champaign
Elsewhere in the region, growth continues to reshape the local landscape. Community Property Management (CPM) has officially opened pre-leasing for its latest project, “Willow on the Pond,” located at 506 Kenwood Road.
The luxury apartment complex, which is being constructed on the former site of the C.S. Johnson Factory, will feature 228 units across eight buildings. With move-ins anticipated by early 2027, the property offers a host of modern amenities, including an indoor golf simulator, pickleball courts, and a scenic walking trail centered around a new pond.
In downtown Champaign, excitement is also building for the grand opening of Haypenny Market. The new convenience store and lunch counter, located at 115 N. Market St., will celebrate its official launch with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, live music, and family activities on September 4 from 4 to 8 p.m.
Leadership Transition at Carle Health
The regional business landscape also sees a significant leadership shift in the healthcare sector. Carle Health announced that Angie Hatfield Marker has been named the new vice president of the Carle Health Center of Philanthropy, effective October 18.
Marker, who currently serves as executive director of development and campaigns, will step into the role following the retirement of long-time leader Beth Katsinas. With over 25 years of leadership experience and a track record of securing over $30 million in campaign support for the organization, Marker is tasked with guiding the health system’s current $60 million, five-year fundraising initiative.
“Philanthropy is rooted in relationships,” Marker said of her upcoming appointment. “I’m excited to continue strengthening those relationships to create meaningful, lasting impact.”
