From Hardship to the Premier League: The Unrelenting Rise of Joao Pedro

The journey to the summit of professional football is rarely a straight line, but for Joao Pedro, the path was paved with profound sacrifice, emotional turmoil, and an unwavering maternal bond. From the inland city of Ribeirao Preto to the bright lights of the Premier League, his story is one of sheer defiance against the odds.

A Foundation Built on Sacrifice

Raised primarily by his mother, Flavia Junqueira, and his grandmother, Joao Pedro grew up in the shadow of a fractured family history. His father, former Botafogo footballer Jose Joao de Jesus—known as Chicao—was largely absent, serving an eight-year prison sentence for his involvement in a murder case.

Amidst these turbulent circumstances, Junqueira identified her son’s prodigious talent and committed herself entirely to his future. “Joao had a dream,” she told BBC Sport. “I shared that dream with my son. The dream didn’t have a price.”

When Fluminense came calling, the transition was far from seamless. Leaving behind her job and support network, Junqueira relocated to Rio de Janeiro with her son. The move was initially devastating; the young boy struggled with intense homesickness, weeping frequently during the transition. His trials in the academy were equally difficult, as coaches questioned his physical stature, labeling him “not strong enough” to succeed.

Forging a Pro Athlete

Rather than allowing the criticism to break him, Junqueira made a pivotal decision: despite their tightening financial situation, she hired a personal trainer, Rodrigo Goncalves, to help her son catch up.

“He was very skinny and there was a significant physical disparity between him and the other athletes,” Goncalves recalled. “At first, he went a bit reluctantly, pushed by his mother. But he never stopped training.” Over time, the boy who cried during practice sessions evolved into a focused athlete, recognizing that his physical development was the key to unlocking his potential.

The Path to England

The turning point came when Joao Pedro, a lifelong admirer of the Premier League, was scouted by Watford. A persuasive phone call from fellow Brazilian star Richarlison, who had previously navigated the move to England, helped cement the decision.

However, the move was fraught with bureaucratic hurdles. It took eight months to secure a work permit—a delay that Junqueira credits her son’s spectacular overhead kick against Cruzeiro in 2019 for overcoming, as the brilliance of the goal proved he was an exceptional talent.

The move to England in December 2019 brought immediate new challenges. Upon arrival, the family found themselves isolated; their bank cards were not functioning in the UK. They were rescued by the kindness of Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, who took the pair under his wing and ensured they were cared for during the holidays.

A Transformed Star

If the move was the challenge, the COVID-19 pandemic provided the final crucible. During the lockdown, Joao Pedro redoubled his efforts with trainer Goncalves, undergoing a physical transformation that saw him pack on eight kilograms of muscle.

The boy who once wept under the weight of pressure had been replaced by a resilient professional. Today, Joao Pedro stands as a testament to his mother’s mantra: “If I gave him one thing, it is to fight for what you want all the time.”

His rise is a powerful reminder that while talent opens the door, it is the grit fostered through hardship that allows a player to thrive in the world’s most competitive Premier League environment.
