Johnny Depp to return as Jack Sparrow in 'Pirates of the Caribbean 6', producer Jerry Bruckheimer shares casting update

Whispers are growing louder that Johnny Depp might once again grace the silver screen as the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow. Fans worldwide have ardently campaigned for his return to the highly popular ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise, and it appears their hopes may finally materialize. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that active discussions are in progress with the actor concerning his potential involvement in the much-anticipated sixth installment.

Speaking candidly to Deadline at D23, Bruckheimer offered an encouraging update: “We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.” This statement has ignited considerable excitement among the franchise’s dedicated fanbase.

However, despite these promising conversations with Depp, sources close to the project have indicated to Variety that ‘Pirates 6’ might not exclusively revolve around another Jack Sparrow-centric adventure. The latest developments suggest a potential shift in narrative focus, with Margot Robbie’s character possibly taking center stage. In this scenario, Depp’s iconic portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow could transition into a supporting role, offering a fresh dynamic to the long-running series.

Bruckheimer has consistently expressed his keen desire for Depp’s return to the beloved role. Earlier this year, when questioned about the possibility of the franchise passing the torch to a new lead, the producer unequivocally stated, “If it’s up to me, he (Johnny Depp) will be in it.” This sentiment echoes Depp’s own openness to reprising the character, as a source close to the actor informed People in July 2023 that “anything is possible” regarding his casting. Furthermore, in August 2025, Bruckheimer informed Entertainment Weekly that he had personally spoken with Depp about a potential return, expressing his belief that the actor “would do it.” At that time, he also emphasized that the ultimate decision regarding Depp’s involvement would largely hinge on the finalized screenplay.

The development of the next ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film has been an ongoing saga for several years. Notable talents, including ‘The Last of Us’ co-creator Craig Mazin and veteran ‘Pirates’ screenwriter Ted Elliott, have previously been attached to crafting the screenplay. Mazin had earlier hinted at the project’s creative direction, teasing, “We came up with this really cool story.”

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series stands as one of Disney’s most commercially triumphant live-action franchises, having amassed an impressive global box office revenue of approximately $4.5 billion across its five films. The most recent entry, 2017’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’, garnered approximately $795.9 million worldwide. That film concluded with a post-credits sequence featuring the return of Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann, subtly hinting at the potential reappearance of Davy Jones and further expansions within the expansive ‘Pirates’ universe.
