Joshua Zirkzee lined up as alternative to Folarin Balogun after USA striker has medical 'complication'

Everton Transfer Deadline Day Chaos: Folarin Balogun Move in Serious Jeopardy

Everton’s high-stakes pursuit of U.S. international forward Folarin Balogun has been thrown into complete disarray as the transfer deadline looms. What appeared to be a straightforward £40 million agreement between the Merseyside club and Monaco is now on the brink of collapse following a series of dramatic developments.

Initial reports from French journalist Fabrice Hawkins indicated that complications regarding the striker’s medical assessment have halted proceedings. The situation took an even more alarming turn when RMC Sport reported that the former Arsenal man failed to attend a scheduled medical examination with the Toffees, leaving club officials scrambling to salvage the deal.

A Domino Effect of Failure

The potential collapse of the transfer has triggered significant concerns across Europe. Journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking on talkSPORT, highlighted the gravity of the situation: “The move is in doubt. There has been a complication with the medical, and this is very dramatic because Monaco had already got a replacement lined up.”

Monaco had intended to sign Erik Lira from Mexican side Cruz Azul, a move that was contingent on offloading Balogun to free up a crucial non-EU player spot in their squad. With the Ligue 1 transfer window now closed, Monaco’s inability to finalize the departure of the 23-year-old has left them in a precarious position.

Crisis at Goodison Park

For Everton, the timing could not be worse. Having already sanctioned the £15 million sale of Beto to Fiorentina earlier today, the club is now desperately thin in the attacking third. Should the Folarin Balogun deal fall through completely—compounded by the apparent breakdown of their pursuit of Richarlison—managerial staff will be left with Thierno Barry as their only recognized senior centre-forward.

Reports from MARCA suggest that Everton have begun exploring a move for Manchester United forward Zirkzee as an emergency alternative, though it remains unclear if they can successfully pivot to a new target with so little time remaining on the clock.

An Eventful Campaign

Balogun’s season has been marked by extreme peaks and troughs. After netting 31 goals in 91 appearances for Monaco, he proved his quality on the international stage, scoring three times for the United States at the FIFA World Cup. His tournament was not without controversy, however, as he was red-carded against Bosnia-Herzegovina for serious foul play. Although FIFA later suspended that ban—allowing him to play in the USA’s last-16 loss to Belgium—the striker now faces the biggest off-field uncertainty of his career.

As the clock ticks down, the future of the American striker remains a major talking point. Both Everton and Monaco face a frantic race against time to resolve the medical hurdles and determine whether this blockbuster deal can be resurrected before the window shuts for good.
