Kavin Sets the Record Straight on ‘Hi’: Debunking the Age-Gap Romance Rumors

The pairing of South Indian cinema sensation Nayanthara and rising star Kavin in the upcoming Tamil film Hi has been one of the most discussed topics in the industry. Ever since the project was announced, the six-year age gap between the two leads—Nayanthara at 41 and Kavin at 36—has fueled persistent speculation that the film serves as an exploration of a romance between an older woman and a younger man.

With the trailer leaving the nature of their relationship intentionally ambiguous, fans and critics alike have been eager to categorize the film. However, in a recent interview, Kavin finally put the speculation to rest.

“A Simple and Ordinary Love Story”

Speaking to Galatta Plus, Kavin addressed the rumors head-on when asked if the film centers on a May-December romance. Interrupting the line of questioning, he stated firmly, “No, no. I would like to stop you right there. This is a very simple, ordinary love story. The love story is between two families.”

Kavin clarified that the narrative conflict is rooted in familial entanglements rather than the biological ages of the protagonists. Reinforcing this sentiment, director Vishnu Edavan provided a cryptic yet insightful addition to the discourse: “There is a gap, but it is not an age gap.”

Dispelling Trends and Coincidences

The discourse surrounding Hi has been further complicated by its proximity to other regional projects like Vishwanath and Sons and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, both of which focus on relationships with notable age differences. Addressing the comparisons, Kavin emphasized that the release timing is purely coincidental.

“None of us, neither our team nor theirs, knew that we would be coming along with Vishwanath and Sons,” Kavin explained. “We started this [project] two years ago.” He reiterated that the films were conceived independently and that the team is not chasing trends, choosing instead to let the narrative stand on its own merits.

A Star-Studded Debut

Hi marks the highly anticipated directorial debut of filmmaker and lyricist Vishnu Edavan. The film boasts a powerhouse ensemble cast, including the late filmmaker Bhagyaraj, along with veteran actors Prabhu and Radikaa Sarathkumar. The supporting lineup further features VTV Ganesh, Sathyan, Amrutha Srinivasan, Aadhithya Kadhir, Kureshi, Fepsi Vijayan, Renji Panicker, Kaviya Arivumani, and Mirchi Kemy.

With a technical team featuring music by Jen Martin, cinematography by Rajesh Shukla, and editing by Philomin Raj, the project has generated significant buzz ahead of its theatrical debut. As the team gears up for the release of Hi on August 28, it is clear that the makers are confident in the strength of their screenplay, preferring to let the story speak for itself rather than relying on the buzz generated by public misconceptions.
