Large Fire Rages Through Historic Shopping District Near Japan’s Ise Jingu Shrine

ISE, Japan – A massive fire erupted Monday afternoon in a bustling shopping district located in the shadow of the historic Ise Jingu shrine, prompting an emergency response as flames spread across multiple buildings.

Local police and fire officials reported that the blaze began at approximately 3:15 p.m. in a commercial area near the outer shrine of the Ise Jingu complex in Mie Prefecture. The site is widely considered one of the most sacred locations in Japan, housing the inner shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu.

Emergency services were alerted by a witness who spotted smoke rising from the shopping street. As of late Monday, there have been no confirmed injuries, and firefighting crews continue to battle the inferno to prevent it from encroaching further into the historic surroundings.

The scale of the fire has caused significant alarm among local business owners. A 78-year-old restaurateur, whose establishment is located roughly 100 meters from the site of the blaze, described a chaotic scene characterized by thick, black smoke and the unsettling sound of potential explosions.

“The street in front of the station has been almost completely burned down,” the witness said. “It looks like it will take time to put out the fire, and I’m worried it could spread further.”

The incident has drawn significant concern given the proximity of the shopping district to the Ise Jingu site, which draws millions of visitors annually. Authorities are currently focusing on containment efforts, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
