Mag’s 940, a gay bar on Elysian Fields Avenue known for drag shows and LGBTQ+ events, has apparently closed.
Signage for the Marigny club had been removed from the exterior by Thursday morning. One of the doors was also boarded up and entrances were locked.
Listings online for Yelp and Mapquest list Mag’s as closed as of July 26, although there has been no official announcement from the business.
Mag’s 940, which originally opened as John Paul’s Bar in 2013, has been a mainstay on Elysian Fields Avenue for years. The bar is located in an area of the Marigny where queer spaces have historically thrived. It is across the street from Phoenix Bar, a longtime 24-hour bar that caters to New Orleans’ leather and kink communities. Down North Rampart a few blocks from Mag’s is Wifey’s, a new queer bar that opened last year.
A few blocks away is Friendly Bar, a popular dive where folks often gather to watch Saints games or play darts.
It is unclear why Mag’s suddenly closed its doors. The Times-Picayune will update this story as more information is available.
