Man charged with double murder following fatal house fire in Grangetown
A 23-year-old man has been charged with murder following a devastating house fire in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, that claimed the lives of a 34-year-old woman and a seven-year-old girl.
Jaden Wright is set to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday to face two counts of murder. In addition to the murder charges, he faces two counts of grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and two counts of attempted GBH with intent.
The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of August 26 on Birchington Avenue. Emergency services were called to the scene of the blaze, where Natalie McDonald, 34, and seven-year-old Valentina Foster were confirmed to have died.
The incident, which has left the local community in shock, resulted in injuries to four other individuals. As of late last week, a 48-year-old woman remained in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in a “critical but stable” condition, while a 27-year-old man was receiving treatment at James Cook University Hospital. Two teenage girls were also hospitalized but have since been discharged after being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
In the wake of the incident, a 31-year-old man who had been arrested in connection with the investigation was released without charge on Sunday.
Senior investigating officer Katie Smith of Northumbria Police expressed her condolences to the bereaved, stating: “This has been a truly tragic incident, and my thoughts remain with the families of all those involved.” She also took the opportunity to thank local residents for their cooperation throughout what has been described as a complex and sensitive investigation.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that the decision to charge was reached after a thorough review of the evidence gathered by Cleveland Police. Katie Nicolson, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS North East, urged the public to refrain from speculation regarding the case.
“Our prosecutors have worked closely with Cleveland Police to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court,” Nicolson said. “We remind all concerned that proceedings against the defendant are active and he has the right to a fair trial. It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
