Man charged with manslaughter following death of 75-year-old in suspected burglary

A 46-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated burglary following the death of 75-year-old Rose Smith, who passed away in hospital after a harrowing ordeal at her home.

The incident occurred on August 11, when emergency services were called to a property in Tollington Park, Finsbury Park, following reports of a break-in. Ms. Smith was rushed to the hospital for treatment but tragically died the following day, on August 12.

An 81-year-old man was also treated at the scene and transported to the hospital; he is believed to have been discharged the following day.

Following an investigation into the suspected burglary, police arrested Jeffrey Dean Rose, 46, of Apsley Close, North Harrow, ten days after the incident. He has since been formally charged with manslaughter and aggravated burglary and is expected to appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court today.

In the wake of the tragedy, Ms. Smith’s devastated family has paid a heartfelt tribute to the great-grandmother, describing her as the “life and soul of the party.”

“This is the most devastating loss our family could ever have imagined,” the family said in a statement. “Rose was a truly wonderful, outgoing woman who was loved by so many people. She loved bingo, going to cafés with her friends and, above all, spending time with her family.”

The family highlighted her deep devotion to her loved ones, noting that she “treasured the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild.”

Urging the public to remember her for the vibrant woman she was, her relatives described her as “loving, fun, kind, sociable and full of life.”

As the legal process begins, the community of Finsbury Park remains in shock following the loss of such a well-loved member of the neighborhood. The investigation remains ongoing as the suspect prepares for his initial court appearance.
