Tragic Loss of Life as Violent Storms Batter Cyprus Coast

A severe and sudden storm has left a trail of devastation across Cyprus, resulting in the death of a businessman and triggering a massive, ongoing rescue operation after a high-speed ferry capsized with hundreds of passengers on board.

The Mediterranean island was struck by a powerful weather system on Saturday, characterized by torrential rain and fierce winds that caused widespread disruption, including landslides, fallen trees, and flooded streets.

Businessman Dies Attempting to Save Vessel

In a harrowing incident near Cape Greco, off the island’s southeastern coast, several yachts were caught in treacherous, choppy seas and forced onto the rocks. Among the victims was 77-year-old businessman Dimis Mavropoulos.

Witnesses described a desperate scene as the storm intensified. A bystander identified as A. Panikos, who was photographing the coastal weather, recalled seeing the yachts being battered by waves. According to reports, Mr. Mavropoulos’s friends urged him to evacuate the vessel as it began to list sideways. However, the businessman insisted on remaining on board in a final, futile attempt to save his boat from being smashed against the rocks.

Emergency services, including a rescue helicopter, were deployed to the site. Mr. Mavropoulos was eventually pulled from the water in an unconscious state and was later pronounced dead. Two other survivors were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Massive Ferry Rescue Operation

The tragedy at Cape Greco occurred amid a broader climate of danger across the island. On the northern coast, near the town of Kyrenia, a high-speed ferry carrying 260 people capsized as the storm hit.

The vessel, reportedly a catamaran, began taking on water approximately four miles offshore, prompting a coordinated search and rescue mission involving the TRNC and the Republic of Turkey Coast Guard. While initial reports indicated that over 200 passengers had been rescued, officials have confirmed that the incident resulted in multiple fatalities, with dozens still reported missing.

Public Works Minister Erhan Arikli stated that “rough” sea conditions were significantly hindering rescue efforts, noting that the primary objective remains bringing all passengers to safety.

Turkey’s Vice President, Cevdet Yilmaz, expressed deep condolences following the disaster, confirming that search operations are continuing without interruption to locate those still missing in the aftermath of this lethal storm.

The authorities continue to monitor the situation as the island grapples with the aftermath of one of its most destructive weather events in recent memory.
