Manav Suthar Rewrites History Books with Sensational Test Debut Performances

Galle, Sri Lanka – Indian spinner Manav Suthar has etched his name into the annals of Test cricket history, achieving a remarkable feat that has stood untouched for 94 years. On Wednesday, August 19th, the 24-year-old Rajasthan native became only the second Indian cricketer, and the first spinner, to claim a five-wicket haul in both his debut home Test and his debut away Test. This extraordinary achievement places him in an elite club previously occupied solely by the legendary Mohammad Nisar.

Suthar’s meteoric rise began on June 6, 2026, during his Test debut against Afghanistan in Mullanpur, where he made an immediate impact by securing six wickets in the first innings. He then carried this sensational form into his inaugural overseas assignment against Sri Lanka in Galle, culminating in a match-winning performance that saw him bag 10 wickets across the Test played from August 15th to 19th.

In the Galle Test, Suthar’s spell was instrumental in India’s commanding 165-run victory. After an impressive return of 4 for 76 in Sri Lanka’s first innings, he delivered a devastating performance in the second, dismantling the opposition with figures of 6 for 55.

His exceptional achievement echoes the pioneering efforts of Mohammad Nisar, who made his Test debut on June 25, 1932, at Lord’s against England, recording a five-wicket haul of 5 for 93. Nisar then repeated this feat in his first home Test against England in Mumbai on December 15, 1933, claiming 5 for 90. For almost a century, this unique distinction remained unmatched until Suthar’s recent heroics.

Beyond equalling Nisar’s historic record, Suthar’s performance in Galle also placed him alongside two of India’s most celebrated Test spinners. His six-wicket haul in the second innings made him only the third Indian to achieve this milestone in a Test innings played in Sri Lanka, joining the illustrious company of Ravichandran Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh.

Suthar concluded the match with outstanding figures of 10 for 131 from 54.2 overs, thereby breaking Harbhajan Singh’s record for the best bowling figures by an Indian in a Test match played in Sri Lanka. Harbhajan’s previous record stood at 10 for 153, achieved in Galle during the July-August 2008 Test.

Furthermore, Manav Suthar also became the youngest Indian to claim a 10-wicket haul in a Test match and now stands as the third Indian, after Harbhajan and Ashwin, to achieve a 10-wicket haul in a Test in Sri Lanka.

While Suthar’s heroics have rewritten numerous Indian records, the overall record for the best match figures by a visiting bowler in Sri Lanka remains with South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj, who took an astonishing 12 for 283 against Sri Lanka in the July 2018 Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.

At just 24 years old, Manav Suthar has already left an indelible mark on the cricketing world, with his breakthrough performance in Galle adding a significant and historic chapter to his burgeoning Test career. Cricket enthusiasts will undoubtedly be eagerly watching his journey as he continues to defy expectations and set new benchmarks.
