Manav Suthar’s Masterclass Seals Dominant Indian Victory in Galle Test

GALLE, Sri Lanka – India triumphed over Sri Lanka in a commanding fashion, securing a 165-run victory in the first Test at Galle, largely thanks to a phenomenal bowling performance by Manav Suthar. The young spinner’s second five-wicket haul of the match, culminating in a career-best ten-wicket haul, dismantled the Sri Lankan batting lineup in just over a session on the final day.

The morning of Day 5 presented an unexpected challenge for the visitors. Contrary to typical fifth-day pitches, the Galle surface remained true, offering little assistance to the bowlers. Sri Lankan batsmen Sonal Dinusha and captain Dhananjaya de Silva forged a resilient left-right partnership, mirroring the stubborn stand seen in the first innings between Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella. This partnership frustrated the Indian attack for over 30 overs, keeping them wicketless as the morning session progressed.

Indian captain Shubman Gill employed a variety of bowling rotations, but breakthroughs remained elusive. The tension was palpable until Dhananjaya de Silva, seemingly losing concentration, threw away his wicket. The relief in the Indian camp was evident, particularly from Ravindra Jadeja, whose celebration – arms raised then dropping, a gesture of profound relief rather than mere joy – perfectly encapsulated the moment. This breakthrough was particularly sweet for Jadeja, who had dismissed de Silva on Day 4 only for a no-ball to offer the Sri Lankan captain a reprieve, leading to the preceding frustrating period of play.

As is often the case at Galle, one wicket quickly brought another. Niroshan Dickwella, under pressure from Yashasvi Jaiswal’s constant chatter and a fiery spell from Prasidh Krishna, soon followed de Silva back to the pavilion. With only four wickets separating India from a comprehensive victory, the writing was on the wall. However, as predicted by Dhruv Jurel in a post-day press conference, the bowlers knew hard work was still required.

The lunch interval proved to be a turning point. After the break, India required a mere 36 minutes to claim the remaining Sri Lankan wickets, wrapping up the innings with remarkable efficiency. Their timing couldn’t have been more perfect, as heavy rain began to fall just moments after the players shook hands, leaving the ground staff content to allow the pitch to recover from the five days of play.

Following his match-winning performance, Manav Suthar’s ten-wicket haul was the talk of the team. He was seen posing with the match ball, receiving a well-deserved flurry of congratulatory pats from his teammates. Suthar not only outshone the more experienced spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, but he also firmly established his credentials as the "all-weather finger spinner" India has been seeking.

Suthar’s masterful control across various phases of play and his adaptability to different ball conditions underscored why selectors and team management hold him in such high regard. His performance in Galle has solidified his place, ensuring he remains a crucial part of the squad. While discussions for the Playing XI for the upcoming Colombo Test will undoubtedly take place, Suthar has certainly ensured his name will not be a topic of debate as India aims for a possible whitewash in the series.
