Actor and activist Mark Ruffalo has issued a sharp rebuttal after being accused of antisemitism by a production company involved in a high-profile corporate merger. The controversy erupted following the actor’s vocal opposition to the Ellison family’s bid to acquire a prominent film studio.

The dispute began on August 21, when the Avengers star took to Instagram to warn against the consolidation of power within the media industry. Ruffalo criticized the proposed acquisition, cautioning that the merger of “profoundly scary technologies” into a massive media conglomerate could have “catastrophic” consequences for the film industry and personal privacy.
In response to his comments, the production company involved hit back, issuing a statement to USA Today that accused the actor of employing antisemitic tropes. The company stated, “We are, as always, troubled when antisemitic tropes are invoked in purported service of a business dispute. Words like ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid,’ applied to a corporate transaction, aren’t just wrong—they’re a bridge too far.”
Ruffalo’s Firm Defense
Ruffalo, known for his long history of political activism, did not let the accusation stand. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the actor characterized the allegations as “appalling and fundamentally dishonest.”
He drew a firm distinction between political critique and religious prejudice, stating, “Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel.”
The actor argued that his concerns were rooted in legitimate scrutiny regarding Oracle’s data and surveillance infrastructure, as well as the impact the merger would have on editorial freedom and the livelihoods of thousands of film industry workers. He emphasized that these concerns are matters of public interest and policy rather than acts of hostility.
“It is the time to dive boldly into all these issues, not step back or concede,” Ruffalo concluded, pointing to the need for a formal security review by lawmakers—a process he claims has yet to be adequately addressed.
