Meet Gautam Rangarajan, The Indian-Origin Strategist Taking Key Role At No. 10, UK PM Andy Burnham's Team

Gautam Rangarajan, a distinguished Indian-origin strategist and media executive, has recently been appointed as an expert adviser on structure and process to British Prime Minister Andy Burnham. This significant new role, based at 10 Downing Street, marks a pivotal moment in Rangarajan’s extensive career, as he steps into the heart of UK administration this week. The UK Prime Minister’s Office highlighted Rangarajan’s invaluable background in their announcement, stating that he “brings significant experience in corporate strategy and transformation.” His primary responsibility will be to offer strategic advice to the Prime Minister’s office, focusing on enhancing its operational structure and refining its internal working processes.

Rangarajan’s professional journey spans over three decades, primarily within the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), before his transition to government service. His academic foundation is equally impressive, having pursued Music at the University of Cambridge, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with First Class honours. Furthering his expertise in governance and leadership, he completed the FT Board Director Programme and obtained the Non-Executive Director Diploma in 2025, according to his professional LinkedIn profile.

His tenure at the BBC commenced in 1993 as a trainee producer with BBC Radio Classical Music. This initial role set the stage for a diverse career that saw him taking on numerous positions across BBC Wales and BBC Radio. From 1995 to 2001, Rangarajan served as a producer, creating programs focused on arts, music, and features for BBC Wales. His notable contributions during this period included productions like “The Night of the October Revolution,” “Opera in Action,” and “Artist of the Week” for Radio 3. He also lent his musical expertise as a producer for television productions such as “Poppea,” “Curlew River,” “Cardiff Singer,” and “Nabucco” for BBC Two, and was actively involved with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Between 2001 and 2003, he advanced to the role of executive producer, overseeing the Radio Music Department for both BBC Wales and BBC Radio. In this capacity, he was instrumental in producing content for BBC Radios 1, 2, 3, and 4, demonstrating his broad understanding of diverse auditory landscapes. His strategic capabilities became increasingly evident as he transitioned to Head of Strategy and Policy from 2005 to 2009. Following this, from 2009 to 2013, he held the influential position of Controller, BBC Corporate Strategy, where he was responsible for leading pan-BBC corporate strategy and played a crucial role in the 2010 licence fee settlement negotiations.

His leadership in strategic planning further solidified when he became Group Director of Strategy and Performance in 2013, a role he maintained until April 2025. For a decade, he steered the overarching strategy for the entire BBC organization. Upon concluding his extensive career at the BBC in 2025, Rangarajan ventured into freelance consultancy, offering his rich expertise to various organizations. He also holds a significant non-executive role as a Board Trustee at Glyndebourne, a position he has held since January 2025. Beyond his professional achievements, Rangarajan possesses a profound passion for music, having sung with the Choir of the Temple Church and deputized with prestigious groups such as Polyphony and the choirs of Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, and St George’s Chapel, Windsor. His musical contributions extend to recording production, including work on the 2012 CD “A Festival of Psalms.” His journey exemplifies a commitment to excellence and strategic vision, now brought to the forefront of UK politics.
