Forecasters have said that there is ‘a lot of warm and dry weather’ on the way in the coming weeks as the UK sees record-breaking temperatures this Bank Holiday weekend

The North East is currently enjoying basking in balmy temperatures, with the mercury forecast to peak at 30°C before the Bank Holiday weekend is over. But just how long will the warm weather last?
The UK saw the hottest day of the year so far, with 30.5°C recorded in Kent – the first time that the month of May has seen a temperature in the thirties since 2012. And the heat is expected to climb throughout the rest of the long weekend, with forecasters expecting records to be broken.
Currently, the UK’s hottest bank holiday sits at 33.3°C – but this Bank Holiday Monday, May 25, sweltering highs of 34°C are forecast in London – beating the forecast for Ibiza in Mallorca, Spain by a whopping 10°C. In the North East, meanwhile, temperatures are expected to reach 28°C in the region’s three cities of Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham.
The Met Office forecast for the North East on the Bank Holiday Monday reads: “Settled and dry day, with bright sunshine and light winds. Feeling hot, though temperatures could be a degree or two cooler along the coast in any sea breezes. Maximum temperature 30°C.”
Brits will no doubt be out in force making the most of the sunshine in the great outdoors – not least because we’re used to any hot spells not hanging around for long. But that not be the case on this occasion as we head into June, according to the latest from forecasters.

While temperatures will reduce by Tuesday and Wednesday, the week is still expected to be dry and sunny – and by Thursday, it will climb back up to a considerably warm 25°C in the North East. Although there is a chance of the odd shower, the Met Office look ahead to next month predicts that there is plenty more pleasant weather to come.
The UK-wide forecast for the period running from Thursday, May 28 to Saturday, June 6 states that temperatures will “remain warm or very warm inland”, although the coast will feel cooler. While some more cloudy conditions are likely for the start of June which could be accompanied by some showers, there will still be “a lot of warm and dry weather in between”, the Met Office said.
The forecast from Sunday, June 7 to Sunday, June 21 across the UK predicts that following an initial unsettled start bringing some wet weather, by mid-June there is evidence of high pressure bringing “more in the way of dry weather for much of the time”. Temperatures at this point are most likely to be near or slightly above average, with “warm or very warm” spells expected.
However, forecasters at the Met Office noted: “However this does not rule out showery intervals, which can be heavy and thundery this time of year.”
Before then, a heat health warning is in force for several regions of England, including the North East, until 5pm on Wednesday, May 27. The yellow alert issued by the UKHSA cautions that “significant impacts are possible across the health and social care services due to the high temperatures”.
