A Middlesbrough charity is set to feature in a major new BBC One documentary fronted by Sir Gareth Southgate.
Middlesbrough Environment City (MEC) – based at the former Nature’s World site in Acklam – hosted the former England and Boro manager and the crew from Cardiff Productions as part of filming for Gareth Southgate: Changing The Game for Young Men, which airs on BBC One on 8 June.
During his visit, Sir Gareth joined a volunteering session involving local young men and learned more about the charity’s work to create opportunities for people to build confidence, develop skills and strengthen connections within their communities.
The documentary examines some of the issues facing young men across the UK and highlights the importance of positive role models, purpose and belonging. Middlesbrough Environment City was selected to showcase how community-led volunteering can play a role in improving wellbeing and creating pathways into education, employment and social engagement.

Middlesbrough Environment City delivers a range of volunteering opportunities throughout the year, helping people of all ages engage in meaningful activity that benefits both individuals and the wider community.
Vicki Putson, Chief Executive of Middlesbrough Environment City, said: “It was a real privilege to welcome Sir Gareth Southgate to our site and to share some of the incredible work being carried out by our volunteers and community members. Gareth was genuinely interested in hearing people’s stories and understanding the positive impact volunteering can have on confidence, wellbeing and future opportunities.
“The themes explored in the documentary resonate strongly with what we see every day. Many of the young people we work with are looking for connection, purpose and a sense of belonging. Volunteering can be a powerful way of helping people develop skills, build relationships and realise their potential.
“We’re proud that Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley will be represented in this programme and hope it helps shine a spotlight on the importance of community organisations and volunteers in supporting local people.”
The documentary will be broadcast on BBC One at 9pm on Monday 8 June.
