Midlands Momentum: How Love Business is Powering a Regional Economic Renaissance

Business confidence across the East Midlands has surged as autumn arrives, with new data from the latest Lloyds Business Barometer revealing a significant 24-point jump in regional optimism. Climbing to 44% in October, the figure marks a robust recovery from September’s 20% reading, signaling a renewed sense of stability and ambition among local enterprises.

This uptick is mirrored by a national trend, as UK-wide business confidence rose six points to hit 47%. The shift is fueled by a more positive outlook on both internal trading prospects and the broader economic climate, despite ongoing global geopolitical volatility.

Strategic Investment in AI and Digital Transformation

As firms across the East Midlands look to capitalize on this wave of optimism, the focus has shifted firmly toward modernization. According to the report, 36% of regional businesses have identified the integration of new technologies—specifically artificial intelligence (AI) and automation—as a primary growth target for the next six months.

This trend toward high-tech adoption reflects a wider shift in the SME sector, where companies are moving beyond basic digitization to leverage data-driven insights. By embedding AI into their operations, businesses in the region aim to improve efficiency, combat persistent cost pressures, and streamline supply chains. This appetite for tech-led growth mirrors broader national sentiments, where increased investment in technology was cited as a core driver for firms expecting stronger activity in the coming year.

Growth Beyond Traditional Horizons

While tech investment is a major priority, regional businesses are casting a wider net to secure their long-term viability. Beyond the adoption of automation, 43% of East Midlands companies are targeting expansion into new markets, while 35% are doubling down on human capital through dedicated training initiatives.

Graham FitzGerald, Regional Director for the East Midlands at Lloyds, noted that the current momentum is a testament to the resilience of local firms. “It’s particularly encouraging to see companies feeling more positive about both their own trading outlook and the wider economy,” FitzGerald stated. “Maintaining this momentum will be important as firms navigate the final months of the year and look to capitalise on the return of confidence.”

Navigating a Complex Economic Landscape

Despite the positive headline figures, the economic environment remains complex. While confidence has risen, it still trails the East Midlands’ 12-month average of 49% and remains below the yearly high of 62% seen in March. Nationally, businesses are balancing this newfound optimism against external challenges, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and inflationary pressures that have yet to fully dissipate.

Fiamma Morton, Managing Director of SME Banking at Lloyds, emphasized that while the ambition to grow is clear, businesses are exercising caution. “There are still challenges, but increasingly the conversation is about what comes next,” Morton said. “Cost pressures haven’t gone away, so investment needs to work hard. Businesses are continuing to find ways to grow, adapt and make their next move.”

With a net balance of 41% of East Midlands firms expecting to increase their headcount over the coming year—an 11-point rise from the previous month—the data suggests that the region’s employers are backing their optimistic outlook with concrete hiring plans. As businesses continue to prioritize technological integration and market diversification, the East Midlands appears poised to navigate the remainder of 2026 with a proactive and growth-oriented strategy.
