Misleading Footage of Activist Mahrang Baloch Circulates Amidst India-Pakistan Tensions

A surge of online misinformation has recently targeted Pakistan, with social media users in India sharing manipulated footage of prominent human rights activist Mahrang Baloch. The viral clips, which falsely allege that she declared Balochistan an independent nation and advocated for Indian sovereignty over Kashmir, have been debunked as fabrications.

The misleading posts, which gained traction around August 11, 2026, appear to be a deliberate attempt to inflame regional sentiments. One such post, shared by a member of the youth wing of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claimed that the 33-year-old activist had openly renounced Pakistan’s hold over its southwestern, mineral-rich province.

Fact-Checking the Footage

The 22-second clip featured in the viral posts is, in reality, a heavily misrepresented excerpt from a speech given by Mahrang Baloch in January 2024. A thorough analysis of the full 20-minute video, originally published by The Balochistan Post, confirms that the activist made no such declarations regarding Balochistan’s independence or the political status of Kashmir.

Instead, the original speech, delivered at a massive public gathering in Quetta, focused on the Baloch Yakjehti Committee’s (BYC) ongoing protest against alleged state-sponsored human rights abuses. During her address, Baloch called for an end to tribal infighting and urged the Baloch people to unite against what she described as the repressive policies of the Pakistani military, including enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.

The Context of Repression

Mahrang Baloch has become a symbol of resistance for the ethnic minority in Balochistan. She began her activism as a teenager after discovering the tortured body of her father. She later founded the BYC to advocate for the families of victims of disappearances, often leading peaceful marches that draw thousands of women.

However, her efforts have faced severe pushback from authorities. She was arrested in March 2025 following protests in the coastal city of Gwadar and was subsequently sentenced to life in prison in July 2026 on charges of murder and terror. This legal verdict has been heavily criticized by international human rights organizations and United Nations experts, who have described the judicial proceedings as a “travesty of justice.”

A Pattern of Disinformation

This incident is part of a broader trend of cross-border misinformation between India and Pakistan. Major Indian news outlets, including Times Now and NewsX Live, inadvertently fueled the narrative by using the misrepresented clip in reports centered around August 11—a date observed by some separatist groups as Balochistan’s “Independence Day,” just days before Pakistan’s own independence celebrations.

While Pakistani authorities continue to deny claims of systemic human rights violations in the region, the circulation of such doctored content highlights the ongoing challenges of digital literacy and the weaponization of social media in the context of long-standing geopolitical conflicts. Independent fact-checkers continue to monitor the situation, noting that this is not the first time such inflammatory, non-factual content has been used to exploit regional tensions.
