Indian Man From Assam Detained in Bangladesh on Smuggling Charges
SRIBHUMI, ASSAM – A 35-year-old resident of Gobindapur village in the Sribhumi district of Assam has been detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) after allegedly crossing the international border illegally.
The man, identified as Balai Namasudra, was reported missing on Thursday after failing to return home from his routine morning activities. According to his wife, Mamata Namasudra, Balai frequently visited the border area to check fishing nets placed near the border pillars. She stated that he had left home at approximately 5:30 am on Thursday to collect his catch but failed to return.
The situation took a turn later that day when Mamata received an unexpected WhatsApp call from an individual in Bangladesh. The caller claimed that her husband had been apprehended for illegal entry and requested digital copies of his identity documents—specifically his voter ID, Aadhaar card, and passport—to facilitate his return through standard administrative procedures.
“The person told me that Balai has been caught in Bangladesh for entering there illegally and he will be sent back after basic documentation, for which these documents were important, and I shared them through WhatsApp,” Mamata explained.
However, the account provided by the BGB paints a much more serious picture. Authorities in Bangladesh state that Namasudra was intercepted in the Kumarshail border area of Barlekha upazila, located in the Moulvibazar district, on August 27. During a high-stakes special operation, the BGB claims to have recovered a foreign-made pistol, two rounds of .22-bore ammunition, and 500 Yaba tablets from his possession, leading to accusations that the man was involved in the cross-border smuggling of arms and narcotics.
Local police in Sribhumi have confirmed the incident. Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Trinayan Bhuyan stated that after receiving a missing person report from the family, local authorities initiated an investigation. Because the disappearance occurred in a sensitive zone beyond the border fencing, the police have been coordinating closely with the Border Security Force (BSF) to determine the exact circumstances of the border crossing.
The incident has caused significant distress in Gobindapur, a village that has seen similar cross-border tensions before. Local residents recalled that roughly eight years ago, another villager named Binanda Namasudra was detained by the BGB under similar circumstances. He was held in Bangladesh for a year before eventually being released.
As authorities continue to investigate the missing Assam man, the case highlights the ongoing challenges of border security and the complexities involved in cross-border legal detentions between India and Bangladesh.
