Multiple Fatalities Confirmed Following Serious Collision Involving Police Vehicle on A66
A major stretch of the A66 in Middlesbrough remains cordoned off this morning after a catastrophic three-vehicle collision resulted in multiple deaths.
Emergency services were scrambled to the South Bank area of the Teesside road shortly after 3:39 am on Saturday, following reports of a crash involving a police car and a Volkswagen Passat.
Cleveland Police have confirmed that the incident resulted in multiple fatalities. While the identities of the deceased have not yet been publicly released, authorities are currently working to notify next of kin.
The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) launched a significant emergency response, deploying 14 units to the scene. The effort included a fleet of ambulance crews, specialist paramedics, a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance, and a hazardous area response team.
Despite the rapid deployment of emergency personnel, officials have confirmed that a number of individuals could not be saved. In a statement, the ambulance service expressed its condolences, noting: "Sadly, despite the best efforts of everyone attending, a number of patients died at the scene. We send our condolences to all of those affected by such a tragic event and thank everyone for all they did to help."
Cleveland Fire Brigade also attended the scene to assist in the operation, with the westbound carriageway remaining entirely closed between Normanby Road and Church Lane. Police have warned motorists that the road is expected to remain shut for "some time" while investigators conduct forensic examinations of the wreckage.
Cleveland Police urged the public to avoid speculation during this early phase of the investigation. "We are working to identify the victims and contact their families," a force spokesperson said. "This is a quickly evolving incident and we ask that members of the public respectfully avoid speculation."
The circumstances surrounding this fatal crash remain under investigation. As the incident involves a police vehicle, it is standard procedure for the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to be notified, and they have been contacted for comment.
Authorities continue to urge commuters to seek alternative routes as the investigation and recovery efforts continue throughout the day.
