New Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 Features Revealed

Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4: What to Expect at Apple’s Upcoming Event

As the technology world turns its eyes toward Apple’s anticipated September 9 event, fresh details have emerged regarding the upcoming wearable lineup. In his latest “Power On” newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has provided a clearer picture of what users can expect from the Apple Watch Series 12 and the new Apple Watch Ultra 4.

Design Stability Over Radical Changes

Despite persistent rumors surrounding potential hardware shifts—including speculation about integrated Touch ID—it appears that this year’s refresh will maintain the established design language of the Series 11 and Ultra 3. Those hoping for a major aesthetic overhaul will likely need to wait; Gurman notes that a more significant redesign is currently in the works but is not slated for release for at least another year or two. Additionally, there are no immediate plans to refresh the Apple Watch SE lineup this year.

The Return of Ceramic

One of the most notable aesthetic updates involves the rumored return of a premium material. Apple is reportedly considering reintroducing a ceramic case option for the Series 12. According to the report, Apple has been testing both white and dark gray variants, reminiscent of the high-end finishes that previously debuted with the Series 3.

Focus on Performance and Wellness

While the external design remains familiar, the internal architecture is set for a meaningful upgrade. Both the Series 11 and Ultra 3 relied on the S10 chip—a component shared with their predecessors—meaning the integration of a new “S11” or later silicon will mark the first significant performance boost for the platform in several years.

Beyond raw speed, Apple is pivoting its software focus toward deeper health insights. New features currently in testing include:

  • Continuous Monitoring: Enhanced heart-rate sensors capable of collecting data around the clock.
  • App Revamps: A significant overhaul of the Health and Fitness apps, designed to provide comprehensive wellness metrics that compete more directly with specialized fitness platforms like Whoop and Oura.

Looking Toward the Future

While this year’s updates lean toward iterative improvements, Apple’s long-term roadmap remains ambitious. The company is actively pursuing the development of non-invasive blood sugar monitoring technology, a breakthrough that officials reportedly hope to bring to the wrist by 2030.

For now, the upcoming September event will likely prioritize internal refinement and a premium material comeback, setting the stage for more revolutionary hardware changes in the years to come.
