A country pub in the shadow of The Roaches is now shut for a 17-day break. Ye Olde Rock Inn closed last night and is not due to reopen until Wednesday 27 May.
Licensees Amie and Edward Haydon have had the pub – which was first in the family in 1985 – since 2021. The break allows a ‘pre-summer maintenance’ at the Upper Hulme tourist hotspot.
In a social media post to customers, Ye Olde Rock Inn stated: “We are now closed for team holidays and routine maintenance. This is something we do every May before the summer season starts. We would like to thank our team for their collective hard work and all customers for their continued support and look foward to welcoming everyone back from May 27 onwards.”

The original part of the historic building is believed to have been constructed in the late 17th century, when it was used as a house for the mill manager responsible for the production of textiles in the village below. Originally called The New Inn, it has been a pub since 1816. Situated in the shadow of the Roaches, with Hen Cloud to the rear, it has always been a popular spot for hikers enjoying the beauty of the Staffordshire Moorlands.
