UAE Batter Asif Khan Handed 15-Month Ban Following Failed Doping Test
United Arab Emirates (UAE) cricketer Asif Khan has been suspended from all forms of the game for 15 months after testing positive for a prohibited performance-enhancing substance.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the sanction after the 36-year-old middle-order batter provided a sample during an out-of-competition testing window on September 8, 2025. The sample was found to contain a metabolite of mesterolone, an anabolic steroid typically utilized to boost testosterone levels.
Admission of Guilt
According to an official statement from the sport’s global governing body, Asif Khan admitted to violating Article 2.1 of the ICC Anti-Doping Code. Rather than contesting the findings, the Pakistan-born cricketer opted to resolve the matter through a Case Resolution Agreement alongside the ICC and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
As a result of his cooperation, the ban was formalized with a backdated start date of September 8, 2025. The suspension is set to run until December 7, 2026.
The ICC has outlined a structured path for his eventual return: while he remains ineligible for competitive matches until December 8, 2026, he will be permitted to resume training with a team or utilize the facilities of an ICC-affiliated club starting October 8, 2026.
Consequences of the Violation
Beyond the suspension period, the ICC has enforced strict penalties regarding his recent performance records. All individual results achieved by Asif between September 8, 2025—the date of the positive test—and December 29, 2025—the start of his provisional suspension—have been disqualified. This measure includes the forfeiture of any medals, ranking points, and prize money associated with his performances during that timeframe.

Asif Khan’s professional journey spans across two nations. Before relocating to the UAE in 2017, he played 32 first-class matches in his native Pakistan. Since making his international debut for the UAE in 2022, he has become a staple of their limited-overs setup, representing the national side in 38 ODIs and 56 T20 Internationals.
This doping case serves as a significant blow to the UAE cricket team, which will now have to plan its upcoming international assignments without the services of the experienced right-handed batter for the remainder of the year and into late 2026.
