Pakistan Bolstered by Babar Azam’s Impending Return for Lord’s Test

Pakistan’s cricket team has received a significant morale boost ahead of the high-stakes second Test against England at Lord’s, with captain Babar Azam signaling his readiness to return to the squad.

After being sidelined for the series opener due to a finger injury—a match Pakistan lost by an innings—the star batter has confirmed he is nearing full fitness. Expressing optimism about his availability, Azam stated he is currently “90% fit” and has already begun testing his recovery by participating in net sessions.

A Call for Accountability

The heavy defeat in the first Test has put immense pressure on the visitors to level the three-match series. Addressing the media, Babar remained defiant, emphasizing that his team has a historical tendency to perform best when they are doubted by critics.

“We as a team have this ability to make a statement when we are written off, and I think you will see a different side at Lord’s, which historically has been a good ground for us,” Azam noted.

However, the captain also underscored the need for accountability among the senior ranks. While he remains committed to supporting his players, he acknowledged that consistent underperformance cannot be ignored indefinitely. “These are our best players and we have to back them to give them confidence, but even I believe that if someone doesn’t perform despite chances, then one must think about changes,” he added.

Babar was also quick to defend teammate Mohammad Rizwan, insisting that the burden of success should not rest on a single individual but must be shared by all senior members of the dressing room.

Tactical Decisions at Lord’s

As the team prepares for the second encounter, the management remains cautious regarding their final lineup. With the pitch at Lord’s presenting a grassy surface, the team is currently assessing whether the conditions warrant an additional spin option.

“There is grass on the pitch, but we have to see how it eventually plays out,” Babar said, noting that a final call on the playing XI will only be made after a final inspection just before the toss. The inclusion of Salman Ali Agha as a second spinner remains on the table, offering a potential strategic shift from the previous match.
