"Time Stood Still": Pakistani Singer Mustafa Zahid Reflects on the Legacy of ‘Awarapan 2’

Nearly two decades after his soulful vocals defined the cult classic Awarapan, Pakistani singer-composer Mustafa Zahid has shared a poignant reflection on the release of the film’s sequel, Awarapan 2. Despite not being directly involved in the project’s music, Zahid expressed immense pride in how the new installment honored his enduring musical contribution.

A Journey Through Time

The singer took to Instagram this past Thursday to share a touching post featuring a photo of himself in front of an Awarapan 2 movie poster, alongside a video of his emotional reaction to the opening credits. As the film began, Zahid’s original voice played against visuals of stars Emraan Hashmi and Shriya Saran, creating a surreal moment for the artist.

"Nearly two decades ago, Awarapan gave me a place in millions of hearts. Tonight, sitting in a theatre watching Awarapan 2, time stood still," he wrote. "In that opening minute, 19 years of my life flashed before my eyes."

Dignity and Gratitude

Zahid candidly addressed his long-standing relationship with the iconic tracks he performed for the original franchise. While he was not tapped to record new material for the sequel, he emphasized that his primary concern was always the preservation of his artistic legacy.

"For 19 years, I carried these songs with me to every stage, every city, and every concert. When I was approached about my songs for the sequel, I never had an issue with making space for new voices. I’ve always believed in giving back and making way for what comes next. All I ever asked for was dignity and due credit for what I had contributed to this legacy," he noted.

Ultimately, the fan reception provided him with the validation he sought. "Tonight, the film began with my voice, followed by the loud cheers from the crowd and in that particular moment, I think I [received] what I always wanted: Dignity and an insane amount of love from all of you."

Addressing the Industry Divide

The road to Awarapan 2 was not without its challenges. During a concert in Chicago just last week, Zahid addressed his absence from the official soundtrack, pointing to the ongoing political tensions that often complicate cross-border artistic collaborations.

"It is unfortunate that sometimes art has to suffer because of all the politics around the world," he told his audience. "So, unfortunately, I am not part of the album, but the amount of love and respect that I have always received from the Indians is absolutely amazing."

A Hopeful Future

Despite the bittersweet nature of the transition, Zahid was quick to celebrate the success of the film, which stars Emraan Hashmi, Disha Patani, and Shabana Azmi, and has already grossed over Rs 153 crore worldwide.

Concluding his tribute with a touch of humor and optimism, he offered his congratulations to the team at Vishesh Films. "Maybe years from now, we’ll meet again for 3.0… You’re crying, I’m not," he quipped. For fans of the franchise, the Pakistani singer‘s grace and continued connection to his work serve as a powerful reminder of how art can transcend even the most difficult political boundaries.
