Peacock Implements Further Price Hikes Despite Achieving First Profitable Quarter
NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock, has announced a new round of price increases for its subscribers, effective immediately and varying by billing dates. This marks another adjustment to its pricing structure since its 2020 launch, coming on the heels of the platform reporting its first-ever profitable quarter.
The ad-supported Peacock Premium service will now cost $12.99 per month, a rise from its previous $10.99. For those seeking an ad-free experience, the Peacock Premium Plus offering sees a more significant increase of $3, bringing its monthly cost to $19.99. The Peacock Select tier will also experience a modest $1 increase, reaching $8.99 per month.
These latest adjustments follow a period of significant strategic shifts for NBCUniversal. The company recently reported its initial profitable quarter for Peacock, a milestone achieved after a concerted effort to mitigate start-up losses. This move also coincides with NBCUniversal’s separation from Versant, with NBC, Bravo, Peacock, and its studios remaining under Comcast’s umbrella, while Versant retained Comcast’s cable leftovers and digital assets.
Despite the recent profitability, NBCUniversal executives had previously cautioned that Peacock’s financial performance would likely fluctuate quarter-to-quarter. This variability is largely attributed to the scheduling of major sports events and other premium content that drives viewership on the platform.
Peacock has demonstrated consistent growth in its subscriber base. The service reported 48 million subscribers in the recent second quarter, an increase from 46 million in the preceding first quarter and a substantial jump from 41 million subscribers in the same period last year.
To maintain this momentum and keep its growing subscriber base engaged, Peacock continues to invest heavily in a diverse range of content. This includes securing rights for major sports and live events such as Sunday Night Football, the NBA, WNBA, Premier League, and a variety of college sports. Its entertainment library is also expanding with movie titles like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Obsession, alongside popular scripted shows such as The Five Star Weekend and reality series including The Traitors and Love Island USA.
The decision to implement further price hikes, even after achieving profitability, underscores the competitive landscape of the streaming industry and the ongoing need for platforms to balance subscriber acquisition with sustainable financial growth. Subscribers will now need to factor in these increased costs as Peacock navigates its path towards long-term financial stability.
