Williams re-signs Alex Albon for 2027 in record breaking contract extension

Albon Extends Williams Stay to 2027 in Landmark Deal Amidst Team Resurgence Hopes

Grove, UK – Williams Racing has secured the services of star driver Alex Albon until the end of the 2027 Formula 1 season, announcing a significant contract extension that underscores both the team’s commitment to its long-term project and Albon’s belief in its future. The Thai driver, who joined Williams in 2022, has become an integral part of the team’s rebuilding efforts, despite a challenging 2026 season.

The one-year extension signals a pivotal moment for Williams as they aim to climb the competitive Formula 1 grid. Albon’s continued presence provides crucial stability and experience for a team determined to reclaim its former glory. This year, Albon marked a personal milestone, becoming the first driver since the team’s golden era to contest 100 Grands Prix for Williams at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Despite a tough 2026 campaign, where Albon has managed to score points on only two occasions and the team has faced a five-race drought without a single point, his faith in Williams’ long-term vision remains unshaken.

"Since joining Atlassian Williams F1 Team in 2022, the transformation this team has made is difficult to put into words," Albon stated. "One tough year doesn’t tell the full picture, and it only gives me more motivation to keep building and pushing together with the factory and our fans to achieve great things. Our story is not over yet, so my full focus now is on doing whatever it takes to get us back up the grid.”

Albon’s decision to commit to Williams comes amidst a period of intense speculation regarding the team’s driver lineup. While Carlos Sainz has been consistently linked with a potential move to rival team Audi, and junior driver Gabriel Bortoleto has swiftly clarified his position should Sainz depart, Albon’s extension provides a strong anchor for Williams’ future plans.

Team Principal James Vowles expressed his delight at the extension, emphasizing Albon’s crucial role in the ongoing transformation. "I am delighted that Alex and Atlassian Williams F1 Team are continuing our extraordinary journey together," Vowles remarked. "Alex has been a leader of this transformation project since day one and we have plenty of unfinished business that we are determined to achieve. Alex is one of the best drivers on the grid and knows better than anyone the enormous improvements we have made in recent years – re-signing him shows the belief we both have in the direction we are heading.”

The 2027 season holds particular significance for Williams, as it will mark the team’s 50th anniversary in Formula 1. The decision to secure Albon’s services through this milestone year highlights the team’s ambition to celebrate its rich history with a stronger, more competitive presence on track. Albon’s leadership, coupled with the team’s dedicated efforts at their Grove factory, is hoped to lay the groundwork for a successful and celebratory period for the iconic British racing outfit.

This extended commitment from Albon is a powerful statement of intent for Williams, signaling their unwavering dedication to their long-term project and their belief in the potential for future success in the highly competitive world of Formula 1. The focus now shifts to leveraging this stability to translate ambition into tangible performance improvements on the track.
