Pentagon Ousts Top Stars & Stripes Leaders Amid Growing Concerns Over Editorial Independence

In a development that has sent shockwaves through the journalism community and prompted bipartisan concern, the Pentagon has terminated several high-ranking staff members at Stars & Stripes, the storied military publication known for its long-standing editorial independence.

On Friday, reporter Lara Korte confirmed her dismissal, a move that coincided with the forced separations of publisher Max Lederer and editor-in-chief Erik Slavin. The terminations follow a week of mounting tension between the publication’s leadership and the Department of Defense.

A Clash of Philosophies

The shake-up appears to be the culmination of a broader dispute regarding the mission of the newspaper. Earlier this week, Lederer—who had already planned to retire at the end of September—issued a candid memo to staff. In it, he noted that his leadership philosophy and understanding of the publication’s mandate were in "fundamental" opposition to the vision currently held by Pentagon leadership.

The situation reached a boiling point following a CBS Sunday Morning report in July, which examined Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s attempts to exert control over the outlet. Sources report that editor-in-chief Erik Slavin was terminated on charges of "insubordination" specifically related to his participation in that interview.

Concerns Over Censorship

The firing of these journalists has drawn sharp criticism from free-speech advocates. Will Creeley, legal director at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, decried the move as "ugly and un-American," characterizing it as an act of punishing journalists for speaking out against institutional pressure.

For her part, Korte expressed deep disappointment regarding the state of the publication. "These firings are a shame for the institution and service members, who swore to defend the Constitution and deserve the right to a free and independent press," Korte said. She emphasized her pride in the team’s recent coverage, particularly their reporting on the ongoing conflict in Iran, noting that military families have long trusted Stars & Stripes to provide transparent and accurate information.

Congressional Pushback

The Pentagon’s aggressive posture has also triggered alarms on Capitol Hill. A group of top Democratic senators, including Richard Blumenthal, Elizabeth Warren, and Jeanne Shaheen, recently penned a letter to Secretary Hegseth regarding the appointment of Navy Capt. Bill Urban as the publication’s new "military deputy to the publisher."

The senators argued that placing an active-duty Public Affairs officer within the senior leadership of an organization whose credibility hinges on its distance from the military chain of command "raises serious questions."

In an open letter published Friday, Capt. Urban attempted to address these concerns, asserting that Stars & Stripes is in need of "modernization." He further claimed to have received "multiple assurances" from Pentagon leadership that they remain committed to the editorial integrity of the publication.

As the dust settles, the future of the historic newspaper—which traces its origins back to the Civil War—remains uncertain. For now, the move to remove its top leadership has cast a long shadow over the future of [independent journalism](https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/21/media/pentagon-stars-and-stripes-reporters-hegseth-fired" target="_blank" rel="nofollow) within the U.S. military.
