Public Movement to Rename Nashville International Airport After Dolly Parton Gains Massive Momentum

NASHVILLE, TN — A grassroots campaign to honor the late country music legend Dolly Parton has reached a significant milestone, with a petition to rename the Nashville International Airport surpassing 100,000 signatures. The surge in support follows the heartbreaking news of the icon’s passing, prompting fans worldwide to advocate for a permanent tribute to her legacy in her home state.

A Legacy Worthy of an Airport

Originally launched on January 21, 2025, by Tennessee residents Lydia Popovich and Dan Dion, the petition calls for the facility—currently known as BNA, or the Nashville International Airport—to be rechristened the “Dolly Parton International Airport.”

The airport’s current name pays homage to Col. Harry Smith Berry, a former Tennessee soldier and civic leader who played a pivotal role in the creation of the original airfield. However, proponents of the name change argue that Parton’s global influence and her status as a cultural icon for Tennessee make her the perfect namesake for the city’s primary gateway.

“Since her passing, tens of thousands of additional supporters have visited and signed this petition,” Popovich and Dion said in a joint statement. “The outpouring of support has reinvigorated our mission. Dolly deserves to be remembered and celebrated. What a wonderful way to share her light and magic across Tennessee and the world.”

Celebrity Endorsements

The campaign has received a significant boost from fellow musicians and public figures. Among the most high-profile supporters is Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow.

In a recent video message that has circulated widely, Crow expressed her enthusiastic approval of the initiative. Referencing an interview with Katie Couric, Crow noted, “People are talking about trying to get the Nashville airport… to change to the Dolly Parton airport. Which I’m like, ‘Yes! I think we should.’” Crow, who collaborated with Parton on the 2023 track “You’re No Good,” believes the move is a fitting tribute to a woman who redefined country music.

Remembering an Icon

Dolly Parton, a global superstar known for hits like “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You,” passed away on August 25. The news was confirmed by her family, with her nephew Bryan Seaver sharing a heartfelt video announcement on her social media platforms. Representatives later revealed that the legendary entertainer had been battling cancer for some time.

As the music industry and fans around the globe continue to mourn, the movement to rename Nashville Airport serves as a testament to the enduring impact of Parton’s work.

While the family plans to hold a private funeral service in Nashville for close friends and relatives in the coming days, the public’s desire to memorialize Parton in a grand, permanent way shows no signs of slowing down. For now, supporters hope that the overwhelming signature count will compel local officials to formally consider the renaming request.
