“Playgrounds Over Playstations”: PM Modi Calls for a Sporting Revolution in India
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a stirring call to the nation’s youth on Thursday, urging them to swap screen time for physical activity as part of a broader vision to build a healthier and more resilient India. Speaking at the Khelo India Dialogue via video conferencing, the Prime Minister emphasized that sports must transition from being treated as a secondary school activity to becoming a fundamental “way of life.”
A Shift in Perspective
In a candid address to the country’s rising athletes, PM Modi noted a positive shift in how the younger generation approaches their daily routines. He highlighted that integrating sports into a balanced timetable—alongside rigorous academic pursuits—is a crucial catalyst for India’s growing confidence on the global sporting stage.
“When a timetable is being drafted for careers and studies, sports is finally getting its rightful place,” the Prime Minister remarked. “This is the change that is driving India’s belief in its sporting future. A true sporting culture is established only when schools stop viewing a sports period as a mere co-curricular activity and start treating it as an essential pillar of life.”
In a poignant reminder to parents and students alike, he added, “Playgrounds are more important than Playstations. This shift will only happen when our youth adopt this approach forward.”
The “Sportsman Spirit” as a Societal Value
Beyond the pursuit of podium finishes, PM Modi spoke extensively about the intrinsic value of the “sportsman spirit.” He argued that the lessons learned on the field—resilience, discipline, and the ability to handle both victory and defeat—are transferable skills that foster a more productive work culture and a stronger family system.
“Sports not only teach us how to become champions, but they also teach us how to become better competitors,” the PM explained. “It teaches us about falling, rising, and the determination to keep going. This zeal is difficult to cultivate without spending time on the field.”
Success Beyond the Medal
The Prime Minister emphasized that the impact of an athlete’s success extends far beyond the individual. When a young person triumphs, they carry the identity of their family, school, and region with them.
“Success in sports signifies the blossoming of the individual and their family, while simultaneously enhancing the nation’s pride,” said Modi. “When an athlete succeeds, it elevates the prestige of their school, college, district, and state. The world begins to identify a city or region by the name of the athlete who hails from there.”
The Prime Minister’s message serves as a broader policy push for India’s youth to prioritize physical well-being. By positioning playgrounds as more vital than digital entertainment, the government aims to foster a generation that is not only athletically gifted but also mentally fortified for the challenges of the future.
