Police remain at scene of ‘concern for welfare’ at Bury The Rock car park after 20 hours


Emergency crews and specialist negotiators were first called to the car park on Tuesday (May 26)

Police and other emergency services remain at the scene of a ‘concern for welfare’ incident at the Bury The Rock car park after amid a 20-hour stand off.

Officers, along with fire crews and paramedics, were called to the incident at the junction with Rochdale Road and Derby Way at around 11pm on Tuesday (May 26).

As of 7.30pm on Wednesday, the scene remained active with specialist negotiators in attendance. Multiple police vehicles could be seen parked up on the ground with a small cordon put in place.

It’s understood the incident involved a woman on the top floor of the car park complex. The incident comes just days after police and negotiators again spent 24 hours at the car park dealing with a concern for welfare incident, then cordoning the area off for a further 11 hours due to a similar incident on May 19.

Incident commanders along with multiple ambulances were also seen in attendance, lining Rochdale Road amid the incident as it continued into Wednesday night.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “We have been dealing with a concern for welfare since 11pm last night along with the other emergency services and experienced negotiators.”

As a statement issued by the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service added: “At around 10.55pm last night (Monday 26 May), fire crews were called to the rescue of a person at The Rock in Bury.

“Two fire engines from Bury and Whitefield stations alongside the aerial ladder platform from Bolton Central, the hydraulic platform from Manchester Central and the Technical Response Unit from Leigh quickly attended the scene.

“Working alongside Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service, firefighters implemented appropriate safety measures and remained on standby while the incident was managed by partner agencies. Crews remain in attendance”.
