Praggnanandhaa Dominates Sinquefield Cup, Shares Lead After Strategic Victory
Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa continues to be a formidable force on the international chess circuit, recently securing a pivotal win against World Championship challenger Javokhir Sindarov in the second round of the prestigious Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis. This hard-fought victory propels the 20-year-old into a share of the tournament lead.
The encounter against Sindarov was a marathon, stretching over numerous moves with neither player initially gaining a definitive edge. The breakthrough for Praggnanandhaa came on the 82nd move, when Sindarov committed a critical error. The young Indian Grandmaster capitalized on this misstep with a sequence of precise and calculated moves, maintaining his advantage until Sindarov resigned 13 moves later.
This crucial win brings Praggnanandhaa’s tally to 1.5 points from two rounds, placing him squarely at the top of the standings alongside other chess titans: Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, Levon Aronian, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. His consistent performance underscores a remarkable run of form in recent months.
A String of Recent Triumphs
Praggnanandhaa’s success at the Sinquefield Cup is the latest in a series of impressive achievements. Earlier this month, he clinched the Grand Chess Tour St Louis Rapid and Blitz title, finishing 1.5 points clear of his closest competitors with 23 points from 35 games. A draw against Sindarov in the penultimate round of that tournament was enough to secure his victory.
Furthermore, June saw Praggnanandhaa deliver a historic performance at the Norway Chess 2026 title in Oslo. Demonstrating incredible resilience and strategic prowess, he made a remarkable late charge in the tournament, winning four consecutive classical games. This culminated in a decisive victory over Germany’s Vincent Keymer in the 10th and final round, earning him one of the biggest titles of his burgeoning career.
His exceptional accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. Following his Norway Chess triumph, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay personally felicitated the Grandmaster on Monday, June 8th. The felicitation took place at the Chief Secretariat in Chennai, where Chief Minister Vijay even engaged in a friendly game of chess with the talented 20-year-old, highlighting the national pride in Praggnanandhaa’s achievements.
Difficult Outing for Indian Players at Cairns Cup
While Praggnanandhaa continues his impressive ascent at the Sinquefield Cup, his compatriots faced a more challenging second round at the concurrent Cairns Cup, also held in St. Louis.
Indian players R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, and Koneru Humpy collectively managed only half a point. Vaishali secured a draw against Bibisara Assaubayeva, while Divya Deshmukh suffered a defeat at the hands of Alice Lee. Veteran Humpy also faced a setback, losing her game to Tan Zhongyi.
As a result of the second round, Vaishali and Humpy each hold 0.5 points, while Divya Deshmukh has one point. At the top of the Cairns Cup standings, Zhongyi and Lee lead the field, having won both their games.
