The Princess of Wales is reportedly preparing for a significant international engagement, with plans to accompany Prince William to India this November for the 2026 Earthshot Prize ceremony. This potential trip, as reported by The Mirror, would mark Catherine and William’s first joint overseas journey since the princess began treatment for cancer, following her diagnosis in 2024.
GB News has sought comment from Kensington Palace regarding the proposed travel. An appearance at the Earthshot Prize ceremony in India would signal Catherine’s readiness to resume the kind of high-profile international engagements that were previously a regular feature of her royal calendar. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams had previously indicated to GB News that a trip to India was “a possibility.”
The Princess of Wales withdrew from public duties in January 2024 after disclosing her cancer diagnosis and commencing treatment. This announcement led to a prolonged period away from official engagements, during which she entirely stepped back from her working royal responsibilities.
Her last appearance at her husband’s Earthshot Prize ceremony was four years ago during their visit to Boston. Since then, three successive ceremonies have occurred without her: the 2023 awards in Singapore, the 2024 gathering in Cape Town, and last year’s event in Rio de Janeiro. Her return to the Earthshot stage in November would, therefore, end a four-year absence from an initiative she has been deeply involved with since its inception.
Despite her earlier withdrawal, Catherine’s schedule has shown a notable increase in engagements. In May, she completed her first overseas engagement in over two years, a two-day visit to Reggio Emilia in northern Italy, focusing on early childhood education. Following this trip, she released photographs and an essay, advocating for authentic human connection. Her summer has also included appearances at Trooping the Colour, the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, Royal Ascot, the National Three Peaks Challenge, and Wimbledon, where she presented trophies.
The Earthshot Prize, Prince William’s environmental initiative launched in 2021, has become a prominent platform for climate innovation globally. India holds particular significance as the host country for the ceremony. When William announced India as the venue in February, he highlighted its natural alignment with Earthshot’s goals, citing its status as a global technology leader, its 8 per cent share of the world’s biodiversity, its position as the world’s fastest-growing major climate with the largest young population, and its record of hosting more Earthshot Prize finalists and winners than any other nation.
The country also carries personal resonance for the royal couple. A decade ago, in 2016, William and Catherine undertook a joint tour of India and Bhutan, which included stops in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kaziranga National Park in Assam, and the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra. A return visit would thus blend professional commitments with a reconnection to a country they are familiar with, while also furthering their shared environmental mission.
